I always preferred the mark 1, the 16v is a bit sweeter with an extra 6bhp over the same engine in a mk2. Personally I preferred the way they looked as well, I felt the mk1s were better built at least they looked it. I was shopping for my last fiat (8-9 years ago) a long time my search took in both mk 1 and mk 2 elxs, and I'd never seen a modern car with serious roof rust till I saw a mk2 with it. That and I wasn't a fan of the interior.
However mk1s are soo old now that unless I could have one as a second car I wouldn't, simply because I effectly did a mild rolling restoration on my last mk1 to get it up to mint and that was hard enough on a car that was 8 at the time nevermind one that's homing in on the double decade. And like or not nice ones are getting rare so I would hope it would get looked after.
That's something I can relate to: my parents mk2 had bubbling along the top of the windscreen when they bought it at 5 years old, and my old mk2b had a couple of spots on the roof when I bought it at 6 years old, and by the time I traded it in yesterday, a few more spots were starting to appear. Thankfully though, my new 2008 Grande Punto doesn't appear to have such bodywork issues yet, lol!!
