Hi all,

My 55 has a stuck piston on its nearside caliper. I've plumped for a reconditioned caliper rather than try to strip it down, but I've still got to remove the carrier. Unfortunately it seems totally locked onto the old caliper.

Before I get the heat on it, am I right in saying it just needs unscrewing at the slider bolt (also, how do I screw the carrier onto the new caliper without knackering the seals on the new slider bolt)? BTW the lower guide pin is also totally solid - though looks to be missing the R-clip.

Thanks,

the guide pin at the bottom WILL knock out but you need an Allen Key type fitting on an ordinary socket to remove the caliper bolt, you do not need to remove the carrier.
You are right to be concerned re damaging the rubber when you refit the caliper bolt; use plenty of rubber grease (not ordinary grease) and observe the seal closely to spot it catching.
The piston may appear to be sticking because the inside of the flexible rubber hose has perished and is causing a partial valve like blockage; you should replace this anyway as you have to disconnect it and the old trick of clipping it to prevent fluid loss usually damages it; take the opportunity to flush out the old brake fluid with new.....
