We picked up a lovely 2006 Fiat Rapido 2.8jtd and everything seems to be running well apart from the MIL/check engine light comes on during acceleration at about 115kph and then the engine seems to lose some power. Let up a bit and the light goes away and power returns.

I have tried my creader 123x to find DTC, but apparently it is not being stored. Any thoughts?

Any signs of air leak from turbo/intercooler/hoses etc. up to inlet manifold? I even had one that the EGR pipe going into inlet manifold leaked at the gasket.
Turbo hoses often can have a small leak that only shows under full boost when pulling hard up hills etc.

I will check for that. The hoses do feel very soft, I thought they might be collapsing.
They may feel soft , but usually the don't collapse as the pressure pushes them outwards.
Sometimes an oil stain at a hose clip on turbo pipes may be a guide, or if you are lucky and someone gives it a quick hard rev then off the throttle you may see some sign of a blow/leak under the bonnet at that point.
Keep you head away from moving parts.;)

On the 2.8jtd, engine above 4200rpm, or harsh acceleration which causes excessive pollution will initiate a reduction in rail pressure, and/or reduce injection duration.

Don't think I ever took my Sofim 2.8s above 3800rpm.:)
Especially after seeing the earlier 2.5 and 2.8s my son in law gave me for spares that had holes were the con rods had come througfh the block after bus company "engineers" had deregulated the fuel pumps to rev higher.;););)
