Technical Marea JTD Whine/whistle prob

Any one come across anything like this? I get a lowish pitched whining, whistling noise, under load - sounds very much like an air or vacuum causing it, I can't find the ruddy thing! :bang:

It seems to be linked to either airflow or vacuum - i get it when flooring the car in low gears or under less provocation as i pick up the speed - it's very consistent, coming in at exactly the same revs, is independent of A/C, heater settings, and is still there when i remove the air filter. Obviously, I've checked all the visible piping. It started after a major gearbox rebuild...

Any ideas guys?

Hi Steve and welcome to our forum

It's difficult to diagnose sounds over the forum but....

It could be bearing whine caused by a slight imbalance in the main gear shaft or a distorted bearing. These tend to resonate at certain RPM. Check with who did your gearbox.

On the air side check the fuel vapour purge system.

Hi polecat - thanks for the reply, and apologies (if needed) for using a problem as the reason for logging on with you guys.

Doesn't sound like the resonance as it's indepedent of revs over a limit. I'll have a look at the vapour purge system (if i can find the thing!)

At a guess i would say it's the turbo overworking, you will probably find a pipe split somewhere.

Hiya,

Got td100 and have/had similar sound.

Whilst trying to sort out another problem (overheating/ poss cylinder head gasket) i noticed that the pipe from the Air Filter to the Turbo had been rubbibg on the Battery clamp. It had worn a hole right through. Sealed it with Silicone rubber.

Don't know if this is the problem, or if it has been cured, as i'm still trying to sort out other prob, but it may be worth a look.

could be inlet manifold gasket try tightening the bolts around the manifold.

To back up what Polecat recommended, it's likely to be a bearing in the gearbox on the input shaft. As it happens under load it's probably the thrust bearing. I have exactly the same problem on a series 2 landrover. Strangely enough that happened after I fitted a recon gearbox!

Take the garage that did the gearbox work out in the car so that they can hear it and hand it back to them. BEFORE you do that however, make sure you do still have the correct amount of oil in it or they will just walk away from the warranty.
