Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone out there can help me out. I've got a '99 marea weekend diesel that has the airbag light on (because some idiot {me} took the instrument panel out without disconnecting the battery!)

Now it's mot time and the airbag light is now a fail. I've taken it to an auto-electrician who plugged it in but it wouldn't communicate!?!

The guy said that it's probably the computer on the car is f****d (he was a well spoken gent!!) and if he can't talk to it then he can't turn the light off!

Is there any 'magic' trick around this? Apart from that and a couple of ball joint covers the car passes the mot and I really don't want to right it off over an air bag light!

Thanks in advance for looking!

Legge

I took out my dashboard and carefully took it apart then covered the bulb with black insulation tape. I then stuck a piece of black plastic over the airbag badge bit on passenger side, however I do have a Momo steering wheel fitted, maybe you could gouge out writing on steering wheel or fill with something and colour match to rest of wheel?
My car is very modified tho' and has no door handles, door open with solenoids, it passed with no mention of airbag.....

HI,

Yeah he's git the right kit, said that the car just wont talk to his computer.
I was thinking of removing the bulb but it's a sealed led???

Did he plug into the right socket?
Pic (LHD model)
I have another socket with yellow wire there as I only have drivers airbag (seen it when glovebox was out).

yeah, he tried both sockets and couldn't get anything. Might just send it to the big scrapheap in the sky...

BOTH sockets..??

AFAIK , it'll be EOBD / OBD2.. so you should just have the 1 standard port near the drivers knee / fusebox..,
then you'll use the different coloured link cables depending on which ECU you want to communicate with,
Charlie

Depends upon the age of the car, I believe this will probably be on the old OBD system and not OBD2.

I got 4 of those 3-pin sockets on my marea (or 5, IS might have one but I havent looked for it).
1999 so no OBDII.

hi legge
cover the bulb up so the mot man can not see it go through its safety check when ignition turned on and he has to pass and advise
this way it gives you time to get a working ecu from a scrapyard and substitute if you cant get comms with yours

Cheers all,

yeah its the older 3 pin (OBD1 i think)

the mot tested did say to me that as he's failed it on the airbag then he'll be looking for it on the retest. So I'm thinking that the old cover up the bulb so you can't see it come on and get it tested somewhere else might work, they might not realise that it didn't come on with all the other check lights. Worth a try and like s and b said (thanks!!), it'll give me 12 months to sort it!

Thanks again all
