Hi

I just had my car serviced at Nationwide AutoCentre, and they checked around 70 odd things with the car too. I had a lot of things with a 'red' status (i.e fix it asap), and amber (fix it but not as urgent).

THey were telling me 500 to fix a few of these things. Could people please give me what I would be expecting to pay to replace all of these things?

(The underlined is the category it is under)

Ive noticed little noises my car makes, but it drives fine in my opinion, and had no idea it had all these things wrong with it.

Rough estimates on each to repair please. No Offence to nationwide autocentres, just expect local garages to be cheaper!

Thanks!

Hi, may I ask when your car was last MOT'd?

NEarside lower suspension arm bent (RED)

How did they come to that conclusion? does the car wonder about the road and have difficulty keeping in a straight line?.. do you get creaking? or viabration under braking?

rear brake shoes requires (RED) £131.51
Recommend brake fluid change (RED) £35.00

Brake fluid, i will give them that.. because it should be changed at a recomended interval of every 2 years.

brake shoes... hmm seeming you can pick those up for between around £20-50 top end.. seems a bit steep... but it may just be because im not used to paying garage prices I do stuff like that myself.

CV GAITER - NEARSIDE OUTER DRIVESHAFT GAITOR SPLIT (RED) £97.82

that would of been an MOT failure if it was.. but assuming it could of split.. why £97?.. the gaitors are about £5-10.. and they are also talking about changing the lower suspension arm on the same side... so they could do the gaitor at the same time with relatively little extra work... certainly not enough to justify £97.. when they have to remove the lower suspension arm that side anyway.. could understand it maybe if they didnt have to touch the lower suspension arm.. but in this case they are saying they want to.

Water in offside head light (RED)
OFFSIDE REAR TYRE EXPOSING CORDS (RED)

Cords.. I can understand that.. its extremely dangerous and you could have a serious accident if the tyre actually ruptured suddenly...but id check that if I was you to confirm.. because usually to get to that point your tyre has to be beyond bald.
Water in offside headlight.. again id check that yourself you should be able to see.

RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT CAMBELT (RED) £187.63

When was the cambelt last changed? how do they know it needs changing? They go years between changes. Eigther way you cant physically tell it needs changing.. not unless it was seriously worn.. in which case you would have to actually remove the cambelt covers which is someting I doubt they would of done.

MAJOR OIL LEAK ON ENGINE - POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET (RED)
REAR EXHAUST RUBBERS CRACKED UP (AMBER)
DRIVERS SEAT INSECURE (AMBER)
AIR FILTER HOUSING INSECURE TO MANIFOLD (AMBER)
REAR ENGINE MOUNTING SPLIT (AMBER)
OFFSIDE REAR COIL SPRING CORRODED (AMBER)
BATTERY WEAK (AMBER)

Major oil leak on engine? how did they relate that to a head gasket?
Head gaskets, oil would enter the coolant system if anywhere or visa versa...you certainly wouldnt get oil leaking from the engine with a head gasket.. you would also experience any of the following, white gunk in the oil, loss of coolant, rough running, white steam/smoke from exhuast, overheating. More likely to be a seal, or gasket somewhere.

Exhuast rubbers.. possible.. so id give them that.
Air filter housing? does it seem insecure to you?
Rear engine mounting split? .. although it is a possibility what are you doing with your engine? lol..ive seen cars 20 years old that havent even had to have new engine mountings. Drivers seat insecure?.. again for that to be the case what have you been doing in the car:rolleyes:.. lol.. seats dont just come loose... again would probably be an MOT failure none the less.. but does it feel loose to you?

Rear Coil spring corroded?.. again if it was bad enough it would of failed its MOT... or failed by now.

Dont get me all of them things could be wrong with it.. just seems unlikely on some of them.. and more of a case of "They saw you coming" and are trying to find every single little thing they can to do on the car. So you need to be carefull and have your whits about you.. alot of those points are MOT failures.. and would of I imagine at least showed up as advisories previously.

Kwik fit operate like that as well, I know of somebody that had a 6 month old car, and they said the car had warped disks, changed all the disks and pads all round..with pattern parts.. then when they had a genuine warranty fault with their brakes Vauxhall wouldnt touch it because it wasnt genuine OEM parts.. they did it purely to create work.

Would have to be doing something seriously silly to bend a suspension arm, and the car wouldn't drive right. Check for yourself if it is symmetrical with the other arm. This is a DIY job if you are up for it.

Seems reasonable for the brake fluid replacement. However, I wouldn't put it past them to 'accidentally' snap a bleed screw off the calipers, requiring you to fit a new one. Rear shoes are ~£20, why it would take £110 of labour for a 30 minute job is beyond me.
CV GAITER - NEARSIDE OUTER DRIVESHAFT GAITOR SPLIT (RED) £97.82

Again, very pricey. I've forgotten how it's done, but I think all you need is the gaitor and a wheel bearing. There are even split-boot kits that allow you to fit without driveshaft disassembly, but they are not as good.

Go down to a scrap yard and find one that doesn't have water in (~£15)
OFFSIDE REAR TYRE EXPOSING CORDS (RED)
Get this sorted as soon as possible. Seems a bit weird to me that there is nothing wrong with the tyre on the bent arm, yet there is damage to the perfectly straight arm. Investigate and replace ASAP if true.

CAMBELTS
RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT CAMBELT (RED) £187.63
How do they know this is an issue? If you have an 8v 1.1 or 1.2 (a 55 or 60), then the engines are inherently safe (i.e. they won't smash up your valves if the cambelt fails). Of course, the car will stop if it does snap, which is inconvenient, but don't let them tell any scare-stories of bent valves in the 8v engines. Cambelt kit is about £30, what do they want £140 for? Even if they do the pump (which I would recommend), that's £120 for an hour's labour. You could go to Fiat for less.

MAJOR OIL LEAK ON ENGINE - POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET (RED)
I only know of one Fiat engine that ever leaked oil externally from the head gasket. This will almost certainly be the rocker cover gasket. If you have a basic toolkit, this is about £15 for the gasket, and add a little instant gasket to the corners too.
REAR EXHAUST RUBBERS CRACKED UP (AMBER)
A local exhaust specialist will fit these for next to know money
DRIVERS SEAT INSECURE (AMBER)
I would have expected this to be a 'red' if true, how does it feel to you
AIR FILTER HOUSING INSECURE TO MANIFOLD (AMBER)
You will fix this when you need access to the rocker cover gasket, problem solved
REAR ENGINE MOUNTING SPLIT (AMBER)
You'll need to tell us which model you have for this to make sense, although if it is the engine/transmission one that I think it is, you can just support the engine on a jack and replace in-situ. 20 minute job even if the bolts are a bit stubborn.
OFFSIDE REAR COIL SPRING CORRODED (AMBER)
If you have a trolley jack and axle stands, fixable for a few quid. You don't need coil compressors like the fronts
BATTERY WEAK (AMBER)

And after all that, you shoulod have a sound vehicle. Do your weekly checks and it shoudl stay that way (y)

Haha! Never take a cra to a place like that you got some pretty sound advice as above, sounds like they having you on! They're just like Kwik-fit! Last time I was in SHop buying parts a mechanic from garage near me said he was just speaking to someone who worked at the Kwik fit round the corner and why he didn't work there any longer. Turns out he quit because the manager gave him a box of nails and told him to go stick them in the tyres of cars nearby!!! I couldn't believe it but shows just what they'll do!

And if you put the nail towards the edge of the tread its technically in the side-wall so the tyre is scrap. Barstewards. :p

Take the car to a Fiat independent or a backstreet guy. With the latter you'll need a recomendation but the good guys rely on happy customers coming back so wont be out to rip you off.

Fiat main dealers lots of stick but to be fair they really only want to do the newer cars. The older ones are too much hassle so many put the quote up so you'll go elsewhere.

Thanks for all the posts

My car was last MOTd in May.

THe car drives straight. However, there are a few noises it makes, such as a high pitch police siren type noise when i rev the car if the car doesnt get to the right temperature

Ive had the car for 2 years, and havent had it changed. Not too sure when the last owner changed it either. Im not too sure how they know half of these things. I didnt really ask. They called me after they had finished it and told me I have some major problems ( I tols them that I would pick it up at 5, and they called me at 12, maybe they wanted to get some more cash off me while they wait?)

By what are you doing with your engine, do you mean am I over revving it? I dont rev more than 2500-3000, and rarely use the motorways. Not an agressive driver either.

Lol my drivers seat is fine, its the passenger seat that slides backwards and forwards sometimes, and stays put sometimes. I can assure you that it is only for passenger use ;)

Im a student and 19, so maybe they were trying to take advantage? When I last had it MOT'd, I had a couple of those things that were advisories. My last MOT was in May. I printed out a few copies of all of the things apparently wrong with it (without the prices!) and am going to take it around garages tomorrow. I took it to one today, and said half of it seemed unlikely, and to check the other stuff they would need to put it on a ramp(is that what its called?!)

Thanks Mike and everyone for the replies. Given me some peace of mind. I was seriously panicking and thinking about selling it and buying a new car! I will start taking more care of it to stop it getting to this stage again!

I think DIY is out of the question for me! 19 and not a clue about any of these things. Will sho around though and ask everyone to give me prices/check if it actually needs doing.

My car is a Fiat Punto mk2 1.2, i think its 8 valve.

I think I will start sticking to a local dealer from now on. I should have known better:bang:, as last year I had it serviced at Fiat on a price match with Kwik Fit. The service I got was just terrible. They didnt seem to care at all, and didnt wash the car as they told me they would. I thought it was just Fiat but its national dealers too!

My National Autocentre (Newcastle under Lyme) centre seem to be perfectly decent, shouldn't tar them all with the same brush. However, it's the way these businesses are managed that causes the issues. There's too much concern for the 'here-and-now' sales figures rather than providing good service to guarantee future sales.

Come to think of it, B.S. Marsons (the Fiat main dealer) are pretty decent too. They think I'm bonkers soldiering on with my elderly mk1, but they actually give me discount on parts and labour for having an older car.

My MK2 1.2 8v is going to a Nationwide Autocentre later this week for some other problems (see my thread). Hope they don't quote anything quite as extortionate as this!

RIP-OFF!!!! take the car to an independent garage for a fresh MOT; just fix the things needed to pass; that way the car is safe and by doing it before the current mot expires you have time to do the jobs; priority is to check the tyres; 3 points and a fine for each illegal tyre

The older you get, the more money you earn, the newer and more complex your car becomes. 19 years old and with something as easy to work on as the mk1 1.2 8v is a perfect time to get into Automotive DIY. And with what you've learned whilst doing so, not even the likes of Kwik-Fit would be so cheeky as to try to rip you off.

I must say the service I got from Nationwide autocentre was excellent. They were all friendly and polite.

I definitely need to learn more DIY especially for my car. I think I'll be on these forums more often, as they have proved to be extremely useful!

I have however learned how to fix the fiat punto wiper problem ;)

Lol they may well be friendly and polite but you never know how they treated the car and actually replaced everything they should! You have no way of knowing! :p

I'm sure some of them are good as it just depends on the staff and managing! Majority are poop though
