Well for those who've conversed with me on here you need to know my love in with my Multipla has ended as of 1545 this afternoon. I'd been on a bit of a journey of around 150 miles or so and was on my way home.
We'd been behind a wagon on a single carriageway road which then opened onto a dual carriageway, I didn't need to change down but just left a small gap and built up speed so as when the road opened up I could pass the wagon.
As the road opened I accelerated in 5th and just after passing the wagon the was a mechanical noise from the engine bay, a shuddering and the car started to loose power. I managed to maneuver the car in front of the wagon and switched on the hazard lights and then, luckily, managed to roll the car off a rather handy slip road. The RAC were called, thankfully I'm a member, and the car was transported back to my house where it now it now sits.

Quick History:-
Bought at the end of August it had 76500 miles on it.
Came home and was given an immediate Oil and Filter change.
Oil has been checked every other week and has been fine and has also remained relatively clean.
Last item changed was Cambelt and water pump (Don't say it)
Car has currently 81400 miles on it.
When you turn the key with it in gear it makes the car move forward.
The gears seem relatively easy to select.
The clutch feels OK
There's no holes in the engine it's not streaming fluid over the floor, it hasn't spat oil anywhere into the engine bay.

We've got a couple of theories but if anyone has anything else to add then feel free.

The car is off to the garage in the morning, same one that did the cambelt.

Comments welcome, I'll keep you all updated as to what happens.

sorry to hear, it could be something as simple as a faulty sensor, mine played up last year wouldnt start found out it was the cambelt sensor needed changing cost £30 fingers crossed for a simple fix
 
So just an update on my post and it's not a good one.

Car was taken to my mates garage on Thursday morning and the early prognosis was relatively good and that it was a suspected big failure of clutch and dual mass flywheel. Components were priced at around £300 for Valeo parts and was told that labour costs shouldn't be too bad.

A call on Friday morning made things a lot worse, further investigation revealed a snapped crankshaft and cracked block!!!!

So an engine was found over lunchtime and another mate (By the way I've got some top mates) lent me a van and off I trotted on Saturday to buy a replacement 70K engine for £250.

Estimated labour is going to be £300.

Has anyone else heard of 115 JTD engines snapping the crankshaft???:cry:
 
JTD motors & their derivitives are very widely used by other manufacturers & have gained a very well deserved reputation for general reliability, and not an engine to destroy itself given normal maintenance & use.

So No... In my opinion that would be very rare...a cracked block would, I imagine, lead to the depositing of oil / coolant... and you say there was no evidence of that, has the engine been removed & stripped?

Quite frankly, at £550 that's cheaper than a Clutch and DMF change. Maybe I'll do an engine swap next time :D

On that subject though. Fit precisely those parts to the new engine before you pop it in.

See if you get them to throw in the ECU, that way you won't have to get the injector codes and program them in to your ECU.
 
if you stall your car to stop the engine as turning the key wont stop the engine this can cause the crank to weaken and snap if this is done far to many times....and it usually snaps near the rear of the crank...

:confused: Possibly... but I dont see a reference from the OP to having to stall the engine to stop the car every time...

I mean, if you stop the car by running it into a wall it will damage the bodywork, usually near the point of impact... :rolleyes:
