Can anyone tell me if Magnatec is a good oil to use in Brava/Bravo engines 1.6 & 1.8 only I found this info on the net :

I share your concerns about Magnatec.
I remember the old days when Castrol GTX was the best thing since sliced bread - pity about all the yellow gunge it produced though & all the OHC oilways that got blocked as a result.

I work in a warranty claims dept in Aust. we have been noticing an increase in sludging and blocking of pump pick ups in vehicles with 15,000k service intervals, and it appears to be related to Castrol magnatec oils we have some samples out for testing and i will post results as I get them has anyone else seen such a trend ??

Pulling the wool? Interestingly, Castrol Magnatec is NOT available in the U.S. A reader of my site called two national Castrol distributors and they told him that Castrol's equivalent is the Syntec line but they couldn't confirm that it was the same as the Magnatec. They really doubted that they were the same, as the GTX is a different formula than Syntec. An email to Castrol's website confirmed this suspicion but they wouldn't explain why Magnatec is only available overseas. Interestingly, Castrol were taken to court over their claims of it being a Synthetic oil and it was proved in tests to be an enhanced Mineral oil which has been to all intensive purposes 'magnetised' so that it sticks to metal parts - All metal parts it touches that is - hence the problems with older engines and engines with narrow oil ports which become smaller and smaller over time causing problems!, Hydraulic tappets? - Don't even think about using this stuff!

Castrol Syntec/Magnatec oil is a new cheap synthetic, however owners are now reporting problems which seem to be due to its high ash figure. Castrol Syntec/Magnatec has an ash figure of 1.2%, yet most other synthetics have a figure of

I would not touch magnatec, its a total marketing gimick.

The bits of your engine that need protection are protected by oil under pressure from the oil pump. No amount of oil 'sticking' to those bits will do ANY good at all. You HAVE TO HAVE oil under pressure.

90% of engine wear happens in the first 10 mins? Yup, its cos the oil is cold. Engine oil has to be hot to work correctly, its got nowt to do with having oil that sticks to your conrods like they show in the advert.

No car manufacturer recomends magnatec, wonder why? :)

Castrol has become a bit of a joke these days after ditching the 20W50 GTX and bringing out Castrol Classic at over twice the price and ONLY available by mail order.

I'd much rather pay the same sort of money for a good normal semi synth oil than a cheap oil with some gimicky crap in it.

Tom.

What oil do you recommend then mate...
normal GTX or something else ???

Re: Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

God no, normal GTX is a fully mineral oil and not suitable for our engines. Any semi-synthetic 10W40 oil, Hellfords (Esso), shell, mobil, you name it. Just not Magnatec.

Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

So Tom what oil do you use? mine needs changing soon and im stuck to which oil to use. Ill proberly end up going to fiat and getting some selinia 10w 40. At least then im getting what the manufacturer recommends.

Re: Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

I use the selenia oil and it is very good, and not THAT expensive.

Apparently it is the only tri-basic oil available, does anyone know what this means, and is that a good thing?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

I use selenia for oil changes and hellfords 10W40 semi synth for topups.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

Tom can i have your opinions on fully synthetic oil please.
My dad uses fully synthetic 0w 40 castrol rst or sometimes mobil 1, in his nearly new citroen xsara.
He swears by it but i dont think itll be a good idea to put it in my 3yr old 24000 mile 1.6. Shorly its too thin, what do you think of fully syn oils?

Richard

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

Fully synth is good but 0W40 will not do your car any good at all. It does not matter what the oil is, just as long as its the correct viscosity.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Magnatec Any Good In Fiats ??

Use any standard oil (ie with no wierdo additives) with the recommended viscosity grade, and change it regularly and you will have no problems.

How does magnetic oil stick to non magnetic parts? Doesn't sound very likely, does it?

And stay away from friction modifiers such as Slick 50.

Just change the oil regularly!

comma oil

i have used comma oil for ages there is now gimick advertising its just good plain semi-syn and its cheap.

i have used it in many of my turbos and it works fine im now using it in my 140,000m 1.8 hlx bravo and i change the oil every 6,000. the colour hardly changes you can still see through it!!
