Can anyone tell me if Magnatec is a good oil to use in Brava/Bravo engines 1.6 & 1.8 only I found this info on the net :
I share your concerns about Magnatec.
I remember the old days when Castrol GTX was the best thing since sliced bread - pity about all the yellow gunge it produced though & all the OHC oilways that got blocked as a result.
I work in a warranty claims dept in Aust. we have been noticing an increase in sludging and blocking of pump pick ups in vehicles with 15,000k service intervals, and it appears to be related to Castrol magnatec oils we have some samples out for testing and i will post results as I get them has anyone else seen such a trend ??
Pulling the wool? Interestingly, Castrol Magnatec is NOT available in the U.S. A reader of my site called two national Castrol distributors and they told him that Castrol's equivalent is the Syntec line but they couldn't confirm that it was the same as the Magnatec. They really doubted that they were the same, as the GTX is a different formula than Syntec. An email to Castrol's website confirmed this suspicion but they wouldn't explain why Magnatec is only available overseas. Interestingly, Castrol were taken to court over their claims of it being a Synthetic oil and it was proved in tests to be an enhanced Mineral oil which has been to all intensive purposes 'magnetised' so that it sticks to metal parts - All metal parts it touches that is - hence the problems with older engines and engines with narrow oil ports which become smaller and smaller over time causing problems!, Hydraulic tappets? - Don't even think about using this stuff!
Castrol Syntec/Magnatec oil is a new cheap synthetic, however owners are now reporting problems which seem to be due to its high ash figure. Castrol Syntec/Magnatec has an ash figure of 1.2%, yet most other synthetics have a figure of
