hello again,, 2001 1.2 punto mia,, car is misfiring, when i unplug the MAP sensor it will run normal,, anyway of testing the MAP sensor to see if its this that is faulty? and does anyone know if these have a MAF sensor and where is it located, thanks

hi yes engine managment light is on,, aswell is the temerature light but i think that might be because the fan is naft

take spark plugs out, 1 by one and look at the end of them,

colour and condition, if its been running hot one or two couid be on end of
day's. (you need to get rad fan working now the hot weather is here)

could the fan not working cause the temp light to stay on? ive checked all plugs and all seem ok,, the car overfuels anyway but all of a sudden started to misfire, so i disconected MAP sensor and it stops it misfiring

(could the fan not working cause the temp light to stay on?)

is the light coming on and going off as normal when the engine is cold?

if its staying on from cold iwouid suspect a faulty temp sensor ..which couid cause the car to overfuel,

once a car starts to overfuel the spark plugs are doomed,
so iwouid replace these,
the thing is with these punto's missfiring problems can feed back to ecu and wipe it out, so its best to bin these plugs and if you dont know they age of the ht leads iwouid swap them out too, places like eurocarparts supply them cheap.

as of the map sensor, iwouidnt like to say replace it.,these are expensive
and there may be actualy nothing wrong with it, if eml comes on with it unplugged and goes out with it plugged back in ..iwouidnt condemn it just yet,
iwouid get one from scrapyard if you think its the map sensor,

i wired the fan straight to battery and nothing,, wont come on when sitting there so i pressume is naft and in need of a new one,, the temp light stays on constant,

the engine management light stays on weather the MAP sensor is dissconected or connected, but when i disconect it the misfiring stops.

i though maybe the MAP sensor could have been on its way out and started to overfuel the car and now its completely naft and making it misfire?
hopefully i can get down the scrap yard this week to check if its the map sensor,
thanks for the advice

Hi,

The engine temperature light won't be on because the fan is faulty. The fact you have put 12v direct to the fan and it doesn't work indicates that the fan is indeed duff (although not causing your permanent EML or temp warning).

I would look at the temperature sensor. It could be causing the EML, the misfiring, AND the temp warning light. The temp sensor also has a huge impact on the fuelling of the engine.

Ideally though, as oldhammer says, you need to get the codes read before replacing parts really. It's up to you though, if you can get a new MAP, CTS and fan for a few quid from a local scrappy then fair enough.

cheers,, do you know if the light would stay on if the engine has overheated due to no fan or would it go off on its own when the engine has cooled (say if the cts was ok)

Hi,

It would come on when the temperature gets too high, and go out again when the temperature cools down again. The fact it's constantly on SUGGESTS a faulty sensor or wiring too it. A faulty CTS can also bring on the EML, and cause rough running. A quick code read/ look at live data could rule this in/out though.

I suspect that if your fan was functional, it would be running constantly.

When replacing the fan, don't forget to check the fuse, as when the fans fail, they often take the fuse with them. Person then replaces fan for nice new one, which doesn't work due to fuse being blown and as a result car overheats again.

thanks all for the help,, i wired the car to multiecuscan today and get 3 codes. p0110 p0100 and p0105, i also replaced the map sensor but it still misfires when its connected and black smoke from exhaust, overfueling? took out the temperature sensor and cleaned it but light still on, any other ideas? i think the codes are air pressure, air temerature and coolant temperature? thanks

Clear the codes, drive the car till the eml comes on, read immediately.

One code will often trigger another. But my best guess is coolant temp sensor.
drive with map sensor unplugged? as that stops it from nearly dying.

also when i clear the codes they re-appear quite quike, temperature sensor show within a minute
