i have a 2.0 hgt. problem with the MAF sensor. would a MAf off any bravo fit, or does it need to be off a 2.0. is it possible to clean / replace original sensor, or is this not possible?

Thanks

IIRC, only the MAF off another HGT or 2.0ltr Marea will be suitable.

You can clean them, but have to be VERY careful.... 50/50 chance of it being ok afterwards.

There's a guide over on BOO that shows you how to do it....

http://www.fiatboo.co.uk/photogal/guidepics/maf/maf.pdf

If you have to replace it, stay well away from those £35 Ebay ones.... they are total crud. Fiat will charge you about £180 all in for one brand new....

If you hunt around, you can find them for about £100 ish....

go to maplins and get a can of contact cleaner (£3) then spray your MAF's hot film with it. 90% of the time that fixes the problem. the only time this doesnt work is when your MAF is faulty rather than dirty. you can tell if its faulty, the fuel injection system light will remain lit and the idle will be very erratic.

cleaning the MAF made a huge difference on my car. it is now a lot faster. there is much more power above 3500rpm.

you can do a quick test to see if your MAF is the problem, unplug it then drive. the idle will be erratic but you will also notice more power when driving if the MAF is dirty. if there is no difference trhen your MAF is faulty. if you notice no power increase then your MAF is fine.

the HGT is the only bravo with a MAF, however the same MAF is used on loads of cars, including:

i'm sure that list only covers half the models the same MAF is used on. its a very common part.

a scrapyard MAF costs £5.

google will find you loads of online parts catalogues, or if that fails then ebay ads often have them listed. failing that its time to call your local motor factor and ask nicely.

i'm a big believer in doing research before you go scrapyard hunting. if you dont then you could miss the bit you're looking for just because you dont know where you're supposed to be looking for it.

Hi

A related question on MAF replacements - we all know of the cheap nasty ones available on eBay.

Has anyone had any experience of the ones available from Magneti Marelli. These appear to be somewhat cheaper than the Bosch version - but is it a case of you get what you pay for?

Any experiences or views welcome.

Rich

i dont trust anything that says Magneti Marelli on it because i've spent years replacing failed Magneti Marelli components. it is Fiat's own brand of electrical components, so they're italian, that is enough of a reason to run away imo.

I've noticed quite a few people mentioning cleaning MAF sensors with switch cleaner. This seems to be a little confusing as all the switch cleaners i know contain a PTFE (of similar) component. This leaves a residue designed to aid the movement of a switch / contact. However, in the case of a MAF, and this being a sensor, i'm sure it is not ideal to leave this residue.

I've just cleaned my own MAF with GREAT SUCCESS with IPA (Isopropyl Alchohol) 99.7% concentration. This is the same stuff that all alcohol based cleaners are made from and is commonly available on-line (although i did getsome strange look when i tried to find a shop locally that would sell it to me!!!!!!), i paid under £5 for 500ml from eBay.

As IPA is pure alcohol, it entirely evaporates when exposed to the air so leaves no residue at all. This and a few "q-tip" cotton buds did a perfect job!

yes you're right, the safest cleaners are the residue free types, usually called pcb cleaner rather than switch claner or contact cleaner. its always best to check what you are using.

i've also used brake fluid with no problems but i wouldnt recommend it.

hi thanks for the guide. it says at the end the car needs to relearn the clean maf.. does this mean resetting ecu?

Well if you can find a spare from this list of cars below ( which all use the same MAF )...take it! Beats buying a new one! & STAY AWAY from EBAY!

Just a little heads up from a noob - I've just replaced my MAF unit with a £20 jobby from ebay (this was before reading this thread)...

A 2 minute job to replace the unit and the difference is very positive.
With a 15 minute drive I've got a smile on my face...

Even the little things like it not getting stuck at around 3k rpm ... and a much smoother throttle response.

2 points please;

I managed to break the cable ties securing the maf .. is this a hazard? It seems to fit quite securely..
Does the engine go through a little bit or 're-training-? should i be careful with it for the next couple of hundred miles?

Cheers,
Matt

you can do a quick test to see if your MAF is the problem, unplug it then drive. the idle will be erratic but you will also notice more power when driving if the MAF is dirty. if there is no difference trhen your MAF is faulty. if you notice no power increase then your MAF is fine.

Hi jug,so is this the best way to test for a faulty or dirty maf then?
I Think im gona give mine a go,i didnt know wether there was a way to find it out.(y)

Mike,

i keep forgetting if you have a 147 or 155? if you have a 147 PM me and you can have my spare maf.

i think Jug made a slight typo in his advise, if it feels the same or more powerful after than it suggests the MAF is the issue.

Ry

P.S love the new sig!

Hello everyone. I'm also having problems with my MAF. I bought my Marea from a guy who used a sports filter. Apparently the MAF got all dirty and now the injection light comes on when I use it. If I accelerate a lot, the car gets dead weak. The MAF sensors here are really bad and replicas. It's hard to find a Bosch one in Brazil. And when you do, it's extremely expensive :(
