Technical Louie’s first clutch job

Re: Is it really this small?

Sounds like you're having the same problem with clutches as I've had with the gearbox input shaft oil seal Louie. Twice Fiat ordered me the part after double checking and twice the part was wrong. I've now wasted three days waiting for a part and I can't put anything back together until the oil seal is fitted.

I ended up contacting Ricambio International on the advice of Pottleflump. Guess what? They had the correct seal on the shelf AND knew exactly what I was talking about! Part was ordered 5.30pm Thursday, and by Friday morning the part was on my doormat.

Can't recommend these guys enough (y)

He stuck with the remanufactured kit as the job just needed doing asap..my SeiT was clocking up too many miles..that reminds me..hope he gonna wash it before he tucks it away back in the garage:chin: Poor Louie he gonna be knackered, he so clever at fixing stuff :hug:he saved us a fortune in garage fees :slayer:
We just wondering (and taking bets on) which fiat gonna teach him a thing or too next!

Anyways im sure he be on here soon enough when the jobs done giving you an update(y)

Re: Is it really this small?

The clutch alignment tool I parched was no good! Did say for small cars but not this small. Did it by eye in the end.

I added a couple more washers in the gear linkage and copper greased the linkage ball joints and its well better – much less play :) - the best in our fleet.

Must be the longest Uno clutch job ever. I’ll not say how many hours but had no assistant (apart from Emm making brews thanks babes).

All back together now :) and had my fingers crossed for the first start…

Few more pics

New vs Old kit
New Vs Old.jpg
– spring system are different and theirs no holes in the side wall of the new clutch cover.

Aligned on flywhel.jpg
Located – can’t remember if I had another go before or after this picture. I aligned by looking at the edge of the driven plate and comparing with the cover.

Cups.jpg
Kristian, these are the late Uno MK2 cups

I’d agree with Alex Gs’s guide https://www.fiatforum.com/uno-guides/43629-clutch-change-uno-ie-start.html – I certainly did swear at different places when reassembling. The guide needs to be renamed as its for the carbed Uno 999 - Not the IE with later box.

Just the Brava wanting its clutch kit to be fitted.

Re: Is it really this small?

Glad you got it all done, but, yep, those are dry cups.

You could have removed a hub to dmaper bolt, removed that cable tie, and wiggled the shaft out of the cup. That way there would have be no hub nuts, no gearbox oil etc. to worry about. You also don't disturb the box seals, which can sometimes leak when you remove the cups like that.

You can def do it on the sei as well that way.

Not a fan of cable ties for that boot though, leak/ooze CV grease out easier, and the proper clamps are only about £1 each from a factors.

Most important thing though, its alive :D Well done mate!

thanx Louie, just what i needed.

However i have a question? dis it matter which way around the clutch plate is?

Hi

it's been 4 years so memory is a bit hazy.

seem to recall there being markings on the outer face of the toothed part of the driven plate when mounted on the flywheel.

I think it's really important which way round it goes... manual says flat face to flywheel.

Hi Louie,

Thx for the reply, i seem to have this awkward problem, let me try explain what is happening.

I replaced clutch plate, release bearing and pressure plate,

Sorry for the lenghty text

I started hearing this screaming noise coming from gearbox when i accelerate from 1st to 2nd and then it seems to go softer or away, gears also started geting stiffy to shift them, so i decided to remove and see whats the problem with gearbox. Noting that the release/thrust bearing
was totally crushed.

I bought clutch kit, refitted everything carefully back and bled the system.

I then started the car noting that gears were as smooth as can be when shifting to all gears, 5-speed gearbox.

I took it for a spin around the block but on my return, at a red light i noticed the gears were starting to get stiff when shifting and then luckily when i was parked at home they did not want to go in. bled the system and they were good as new. next day i started up and had no gears.

I have a feeling it could be my release bearing that's not the right size( local dealers have two with different product code but according to them its the samething) or my slave cylinder. When stepping on the clutch pedal it feels like the normal resistance you would get when changing gears except theres no gears.

Last night i removed the gearbox, by myself, to inspect if i might have inserted the clutch plate incorrectly and saw that it was inserted the right way. Flat side to flywheel. all the parts from new clutch kit seems ok.

I am really clueless about this because all the new parts should be working. Any suggestions from you guys would be a great help for me to keep trouble shooting this matter.

Thanx for your reply.

Guy at brake and clutch dealer said it's my slave cylinder, hence the pedal being pumped first to get stiff. wil see and report
