Loud bang and then this.......

I was starting the car this afternoon and it started to splutter a bit, so i thought it must be out of petrol (starts on petrol)
Then as it was about to die there was a very loud bang like a gun shot.
The inside of the car smelt like burning electrical wire.
The smell cleared pretty quickly took a look under the bonnet expecting to see the engine in bits and i found this was the result of the bang..

This is how it used to be
I think it's called a resonator but don't quote me on that the car seems to run ok (i started it on gas)
It feels a little bit ?????? off balance not sure how to describe it.
It runs ok but just doesn't feel right though it might just be me after the bang it's unnerved me.

This is how it is now.
Does anyone know why something like would happen
And what i need to get done now.
(Tom,Nige or anyone with a good technical knowledge please give me a clue.)
Thanks and sorry this was a long post.
Rab.

Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Its a proper backfire! ;) (those popping noises you get from exhausts are NOT backfires)

Manifold full of fuel, gas and air, something lit it and BANG.

Unusual on a modern car, the ECU must have had its knickers in a knot and fired the wrong coil.

It would be a good idea to locate every last bit of plastic, it won't do a great deal of good in the engine.

Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Got it all Tom (i think)
Should i get sonething looked at or changed
Or just carry on as normal?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Get it all! No 'think' about it :)

Take the whole pipe off, turn your gas off and see if she runs. Maybe there is a fault with your gas system.

Check the main airbox too, its probably destroyed the filter.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

I'm out of petrol so i'll get some in it and see if it runs.
And as soon as the rain stops i'll go take a look at the rest of the pipe and see if my filter was toasted.
I'll get some pics for you if it is.
Would it be ok to run the car without the resonator box for a bit or should i get one before i use it again.?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

There is a filthy great hole in the pipe that will now let all sorts of crud in :)

You will loose a little midrange power without the reasonator, just cover the hole up with something that won't get sucked into the engine.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Just had a look at the filter and it's nice and clean (thankfully it's new)
Started her on gas after checking i have got all the plastic for my jigsaw resonator.
Put some petrol in her and came back home switched over to the petrol and she splotters and struggles to run and as soon as i take my foot off the gas she dies.
Is this because of the hole that was my resonator or something else???
Any ideas? :(

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Hmm.. you have a problem somewhere. Did you run totally dry of petrol? Maybe something is bunged up with crud.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

The fuel light was on for a while and it's been spluttering like it is for a couple of days so Tricia tells me (i don't drive it during the week)
The injector light goes off when i start her on petrol so i guess there ok ???
Does the 1.6 mk1 have a fuel filter?
where whould be the best place to start looking for blocked crud?
And whould putting some sort of crud-away cleaner in the tank help or make things worse?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Fuel filter is just infront of the drivers side rear wheel. Behind a plastic cover.

It revs OK on petrol? Have you tried driving it on just petrol?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

No sorry Tom it starts ok on petrol but i have my foot on the gas about half way down and it struggles if i put my foot down further it really struggles
when i lift my foot off it seems to idle ok without any labour and then dies as if it's cold or not getting enough fuel but if i try to keep her going she really struggles and shakes.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

OK, sounds like low fuel pressure. Maybe the pump is shot.

Change the filter and see what happens.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

When i start the car sometimes (before all this happened) it seems as if i have to keep the key turned for a while as if the fuel has run back to the tank.
Could this be due to the fuel pressure?
I'll change the filter and see get a price for a new pump while i'm in the dealers getting the filter.
Anything else i should get??
Sorry to be a pain Tom

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

Filter is £20 ish, pump is £150ish.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Loud bang and then this.......

I hope it's the filter. lol
Would one from a scrappy be ok or are they all shot at after a while?
Is the Mk1/2 pump the same?
Thanks Tom you've been brilliant i'll let you know how it all works out.
