This car has 230000km on it, the gearshift is not positive, sometimes you smiss gears, mostly downshifting. I can't find anything loose or broken, but in operation there does not seem to be a positive H pattern.

Replace the gear linkage bushes, you can get them from Mal Simons (www.fiatparts.co.nz).

Also sometimes you need to replace the bushes in the virtical metal part of the linkage (normally has a welded on nut at the top). You need to carefully grind off the weld, then to replace these bushes you use a piece of irigation hose that you have cut in a spiral pattern, and put in lots of grease.

Thank you JJ. Did you look at my last post on the timing issue and my thought that it could be valve timing? And, does your 87 Uno have a sun roof, if it does did it ever have rust around the sun roof and how did you fix it without buckling the roof?

I talked to Alex about your roof issue, you only really have four options:

1. You can cut out and RIVET in replacement metal (a bit messy and pretty rubbish long term)
2. You can cut out the roof and replace it (I have seen this done, you drill out all the spot welds (under the black plastic strip) then weld in the new roof (dont get me wrong - this is a HUGE job).
3. Get a new shell (without a sunroof - since they are rubbish anyway)
4. Weld in some new metal. You would need to brace the roof to stop it sagging (a piece of wood that goes down to the floor, maybe with a jack underneath to make sure its the right height, you dont want to push up), and weld in very short bursts. If you go with this option you will need to be prepared to do a lot of bogging, and you might as well remove the sun roof all together.

Personally I would go for the welding option.

Mine doesnt have a sun roof since it was originally a 45 sting (903cc motor)

Thanks JJ, I had been thinking about replacing that roof section, and while the sunroof might be rubbish - I like it. Sad I know, but mostly because it ws original even though a rubbish design. I think for now i am going to find ways to "keep it going" and look for a good roof to replace it with in the longer term. So inform an ignorant person, what is the engine you have in yours now. I am hoping to find a luminition for mine, or some similar electronic dist. And i guess, with 3 Saabs now I am also a bit of a Saab fan, certainly euro, after having had Mitsubishi for over 20 years. But then I have had Alfa (1600 Gulia TI) , and Volkswagon (1600 TL) too!!

I have the engine from a Tipo DGT 1.6, with some modification. I am in the process of upgrading the cylinder head, cam shaft, twin carbs, and Uno Turbo gearbox. Shes gunna be a phantom rocket :)

About the sunroof, it was a bit of a lottery whether an Uno had or didnt have a sun roof. I think it was an optional extra (I've had an 84 Uno 70S and it didnt have a sunroof). So ditching the sunroof isnt going to effect the authentisity of your Uno :)

That doesnt sound very likely to me, the bushes are a known fault and often give problems. I cant think what part of the selector forks could cause slack in the gear change. If it is internal gearbox issues then you might be in for an exciting moment soon, but I would be keen to blame the bushes.

You can probably test it by getting someone to hold the gearbox end of the linkages still, and then try wiggle from the other end, if there is play then its definately the bushes.

The gearboxes on early Unos are pretty rubbish (hence my upgrade to Uno Turbo box), so maybe this is your problem (ie there is no problem)

I will sure try your suggestions first. While I keep on the lookout for better Uno bits, like your turbo gearbox and 1242 or 1600 engine. Have fun at Taupo, maybe we will get to A1GP next year.

And about the sun roof, I heard that a few years ago, ages back, Fiat gave away new Uno roof panels because they recognised there was a problem. It was down to the owners to get them fitted. I wonder if there are any lying around in NZ that weren't fitted.
