Hi,

Info, please! I am in the process of buying my daughter a 93 model Uno 1100. The gearshift on this car is, according to me, not quite what it should be. There is no grinding of gears or slipping out of gear or any funny noises but what bothers me is moving the lever around. It feels as if there is too much movement, especially going to 3rd - the lever has to go very far forward to engage. Are there bushes or something that needs to be replaced?

Thanks, any help appreciated.

Im experiancing a slacker gearchange and have whittled it down to the gear selection rods, there are 2 of them under the bonnet that connect to the gearbox and cost a whopping £37 each, have a look and give them a wiggle they should be firm not wibbly wobbly, welcome to the uno section, where are you from? Ant!

The bushes are part of the selector rods, the nylon plastic inside wears away, and is not repairable, not a separate part well on my turbo, ive been talking to a guy who maybe able to make them with rose joints! Ant!

Hang on. The red nylon parts ARE replaceable. But if antsuno2 is talking about the Turbo, then that's all quite different :)

The most common slackness is at the lever clevis-joint (side to side), and the bushes in the vertical bellcrank on the back of the gearbox (often, the nut is welded on top to prevent it coming off - but this of course makes replacing the bushes harder). The red nylon bushes (pressed on to ball-pins) are not really the cause of much slackness.

Get a bush kit from a FIAT specialist - it's cheap (made by an aftermarket supplier). You'll probably have a number of leftover bits.

But we also need to know whether you have the later-type of gearbox introduced in 1993 - where you push down on the lever to select reverse?

If so, then the linkage is different again and includes a cable. Check the Haynes manual for details.

Thanks,
-Alex

Update: I have replaced the bushes (red nylon ones) and I must agree, it did not have much effect. I will now try to get at the rest of them in what Alex calls the vertical bellcrank and see what can be replaced. I must say, the guys in the parts section at the dealers are clueless! Seems I need to find a Fiat specialist around here. Thanks for all the info so far.

Uno's for Africa (In Van Der Hoff road, Pretoria)

Be sure they give you the correct parts and don't take any cars there for repairs.

Just thought i would retract my last statement

My slave cylinder on my clutch broke 2 days ago, was 3 months old and bought from unos4africa.

I was there yesterday to look for the part. On the phone they told me they got it, when I got there they didn't know a thing. The guy behind the counter did not have a clue as to what I was talking about and had to ask one of the mechanics to help me. The part they eventually found is even more worn than the one I have! Looks like the only solution is to take mine apart and have an engineering place make me some new bushes. By the way, the part of the gearlever with the ball on it is bent at a slight angle. Which direction should it point- forwards or backwards??

think it only fits in 1 way.

Try call MRM for the bits you need (they do buy on order and I have never had any problems witrh parts from them)

MRM Spares.
