Ok so I was looking to improve the sound in my punto a bit (cheaply), my standard front speakers have tears, so firstly I was going to get some component speakers like these alpine SXE-1750S (can't post url because i'm new) which are only £30

Could I power these from the headunit? It's a kenwood kdc-241.

Eventually I am looking to get an amp, and a sub.

Ideas? Would it be better just to buy amp and sub first?

Speakers will give you the best improvement in sound, particularly as yours are damaged anyway.

In an ideal world you would get better results with an amp powering them. You could save up and buy the two together.

I wouldn't be afraid to go secondhand either you could get a good deal.

I would also recommend listening to a few sets of speakers too as even cheaper ones can vary in sound and quality.

Thanks for the reply, I think I will get an amp then, so that I can run a sub off it too. I have run into one problem though - my headunit has no pre outs - I have read that it is possible to get an adaptor which changes the speaker level output to RCA outputs, but some people say it gives horrible quality sound?
The other option (apart from buying another headunit) is that you can get amps which have a speaker level input, does anyone have any information on this?

EDIT: Seems like most amps have a speaker level input, so I will probably go down this route. Can I still power 2 speakers and a sub off the one amp?

If you get a four channel amp you could use 2 channels to power your components and bridge the other two to run a sub.
