Must of been here 6 years now. Doesnt time fly!

Right, basically my 1.8hlx has been overheating for a few days which came to a head today with steam coming out my bonnet.

The dial can be anywhere between 2 notches above half way and touching the red bit. There expansion tank is full so there is enough water but the fan isn't coming on as far as I can tell.

Someone with more of a clue than me got some pointers for me to start on? The car drives ok and is as responsive as its ever been. Also whilst driving today I noticed the dial drop from the notch under red to near half way and jump back up again. Would this point towards the thermostat being at fault?

So please fellow Bravo owners, any ideas?

Stephen.

Re: Long Timer Lurker...Help Me.

You say the expansion tank is full, you dont mean to full line and not to the brim ?

Re: Long Timer Lurker...Help Me.

Upto the max line I mean.

Re: Long Timer Lurker...Help Me.

if the temperature is at the red bit does it go down if you carry on running it?

sounds like it could be something as simple as an airlock.. but don't quote me on that as it happened with my old bravo 1.6 and i never actually got that fixed

i suspected the thermostat.. and it would have been the next thing i tried to get it working if i didn't end up scrapping it

the best thing to do is just start it leave it running with the bonnet up and see if

>the fan starts and if it does does the temperature drop
>the water in the expansion tank stays at roughly the same level.... not sure what this signifys but i know when mine was playing up it became presurised and the ended up chucking all the water out.... probably airlocks..
>check all the hoses to and from the radiator and the the radiator itself for any signs of damage

thats about all i can think of without seeing it bar sending it to a garage

Re: Long Timer Lurker...Help Me.

Well when it was spitting steam out I stopped in a carpark and popped the bonnet, the fan wasnt on and from reading the Haynes the fan is directly linked to the thermostat I think. Or a thermostat somewhere.

Re: Long Timer Lurker...Help Me.

there is a thermo switch that put the fan in... Oz's when on his HGT and it overheated.

Hows the rad, condition?? Many fins missing???

Has it been flushed with new coolent added within the last 2years??

I'm guessing either the thermo switch has gone, or the wires which connect it have snapped, or rusted on the connection thus not working.

It should run at 1/2 temp all day long and only creep up slightly when stopped in traffic.

I'll add a bit more to ur title so people who've had this problem can come help.

Cheers Tommy, I've had a 1.6 in the past so I know it should sit on halfway :(

Is the thermo the fan uses the main one on the side of the block? Thats the only one the Haynes mentions but I'm wondering if theres one in the rad somewhere?

Does the high speed fan come on when you turn the aircon on?
