Hi friends
As I mentioned in my first post, where I introduced myself, my car was bought from a work colleague at a rock bottom price. It really was a steal, but it obviously had issues.
I've been working through the problems today and have become stumped.
Firstly, the passenger door would not open from the outside. I thought, no problem, the actuator rod must have become detached. When I looked inside, someone had been there already. The rod was nowhere to be seen. I found that a bucket handle had the right gauge of wire, so as a temp, I bent it into shape and it works ok. But strangely if I lock the door, it won't open outside. But if I open it from the inside, it will open no problem until I lock it again. It's a weird one. I have ordered the proper rod, but don't understand what's going on here.
Next is the rear hatch lock. Again, it won't work from the outside. The car had been stripped down and had been messed about. I noticed that the rubber concertina was damaged and when I investigated, it looked like the wires had been chewed by an angry badger. So I got a repair kit and fixed it. But the lock still isn't working. I took the lock off and connected direct to the battery and the actuator motor spins ok. So it's not the lock. I checked the micro switch, and it's clicking. The car came with a spare switch assembly, I tried it bit it didn't make any difference. Also the number plate lights aren't working but there is continuity across the bulbs.
It's obviously an electrical issue, but I'm scratching my head with this. I am assuming that all the black wires are earth, so won't matter how they were spliced in?
The last issue is the steering wheel buttons don't really work. But I'm not touching that at the moment as if there is an electrical issue elsewhere, it may have a knock on with other systems.
Is there a wiring diagram available? I found drawings on the forum, but not a wiring diagram.
If anyone can help out, I'd be grateful. It's not easy when someone else has messed about with the car. But it was too cheap to pass up.
Thanks in advance

Does the boot lock work from the remote?
The fact it came with a spare switch assembly suggests this is a ongoing issue?
Also the lights not working could be connected, the micro switch may click but does it contact? The switch earth's the wire to trigger the lock unit via the bcm so a missing earth would give both results?
There maybe more than one break in the wires?
It's very possible part of the bcm has got fried due to the wires in the flexible being left too long before fixing?

Hi John
I agree that this is a legacy problem. But it's not been fixed by anyone with knowledge. I think a chimp could have done a better job. I was aware of the problem before I bought it though.
It does not work on the remote. It's completely inert. The only thing that's working is the rear wiper and wash, the high lever brake light and the tail lights. But the tail lights are obviously on a different loom.
I've checked all the fuses too and was surprised there were not any blown considering the state of the umbilical.

Hi John
Will do. I wanted to solder the joints, but I am working outside and couldn't get enough heat for the solder to flow.
I've ordered a Haynes manual, so hopefully I can get a full wiring diagram.
I polished the car this morning and its looking stunning. So well worth getting this problem sorted.
I would look again at the flexible tracing it further back in both directions un clip in boot to give more cable, any power to boot lock or signal wire to micro switch?

Not sure what an MES is.
I do have a Topdon obd2 scanner and it's not showing up any relevant codes.

Can I do a proxi alignment? Or is this a dealer only thing. I've never done this.

Update
Well I have one problem fixed. The passenger door works perfectly now. I got a new actuator rod and clips. And thats all it was. it's all good now.
I will study the wiring diagram and hopefully get to the bottom of the tailgate issue. Hopefully the fact that the central locking is working on the front door suggests that the BCM is ok.

Good news!
I now have a fully functioning tailgate. To be absolutely honest, I'm not sure how. I stripped the switch down completely but no matter whether I did, it was OL on the meter. I decided that the switch was faulty and resigned myself to getting a replacement. So I banged it back onto the car to fill the hole. However it started actuating the motor. I was a bit surprised but happy. However the motor wasn't driving the lock, but just spinning. I took the lock out and found that the plastic casing was broken so that the pinion wasn't engaged. I plastic welded it and stuck it back together and it's all working perfectly. I'm happy now, but it was a fluke rather than proper diagnostics. A bonus is that the number plate lamps have started working again too. So all the locks function perfectly now.
The mirrors were a bit sticky, so I took out the switch and a squirt of WD40 got that working properly. Same with the steering wheel buttons. So pretty happy with progress today. I'm running out of things to fix. The only head scratcher left is that the phone volume is very low. So I'll have to see if there is a setting that I can get the phone volume up.
I'll give it a service and probably chuck a cam belt on. Then it's all good. I bought this to flip, but got to admit that I'm getting quite attached to the wee thing. It just makes me smile.

Update
As everything appeared to be functioning well, I booked the car for an MOT. Yesterday I thought I'd better check under the front to make sure there was nothing that could cause a problem. I saw the exhaust had a leak, so ran into Euro car parts and picked up a new one. I put it to the side to get on with other jobs.
I decided that the front subframe could do with a scrub up and paint. I got all that done and then I had the idea that the sump could do with a smarten up. Oh dear! I started with a wire brush, only for a leak to suddenly appear. So I had no choice but to get that fixed. I was going to service it anyway. So drained the oil. It looked like it needed brake pads too, so had a look on Euro website for filters, oil and pads They were, I thought too expensive. Just for fun, I looked at Halfords and found the same stuff at a very much cheaper price. I drove to town to collect. When I got to the cash desk, I was told that the stuff hadn't arrived yet from Euro C P. Then sure enough, 5 mins later the Euro guy walked in with my stuff. Just shows that it pays to shop around. But I can't quite get my head around how I got it so much cheaper at halfords than direct from the supplier.
I got the sump fixed as I didn't fancy taking the cat off to drop the sump. It's all good. I thought that I could now get the exhaust on, but Euro had given me the wrong one. It was about 2 ft too long. It was too late to go back so I cant change it till Monday. Oh well, get the silencer off and pained. What a drama that turned into.
I couldn't split it at the joint, so cut through the pipe so I could get the box out. That bit was no problem. But getting the remaining stub out of the sleeve joint turn into a 2 hour nightmare. I tried heat, cutting, twisting, hammering. Nothing could get it to move. I was beginning to think it had been welded. Never give up! and I eventually got it chiseled out.
Today, the front pads will go in and the exhaust on Monday. I'll miss the MOT though.
It's going to be an excellent wee car when I'm finished. I could have done without all the drama though.

I finally got the car through it's MOt and passed with no advisories. I got it all polished up and it looks great. Initially I had bought the car to sell on for a bit of profit. I gave it to my wife to show off at her work. But when she got home, she told me that she loved it and wanted to keep it. So now this is hers. I'm not really complaining as it's a lot of fun, but will have to find another route to riches.
All in, including the car, parts and MOT it's about £850. So not bad at all.
Happy days!

True. I really need to replace the rusting sump. But when bolts started snapping on the heat shield, I gave up for a quick fix (JB Weld) but now that she is keeping it, I will have to do the job properly. Looks like the fan and maybe even the rad has to come out.
That's the problem with old cars. Every bolt is either stuck, rusted, rounder or snapped. No job is ever "easy"
