General Little video of my car as it reaches completion

That's brilliant Peter. Sounds good, looks great and most of all its back on the road. 10 out of 10 for perseverance.
Reading your blog its amazing what you have gone through with this little car.
Lovely scenery by the way. wont be long before it will all be covered up with that cold white stuff.

I thought you might like that.
I expect you two won't need to wait as long as I have.
It's obviously well worth it though.
Every tweak is making the driving experience even better.
Ignore the regular worries that crop up about power output and braking input.
My initial experience with standard brakes and engine is that this thing is perfectly balanced....needs to be with a driver like me.

How long did it take you to suss out the double de-clutch? Or have you got previous experience with that?

I've never driven a non syncro before, and have only driven my 500 to the garage...had to free wheel round a corner as it completely caught me out!

(Ps. Here's some footage of me purchasing mine earlier this year, amongst some home movie stuff: [ame]http://vimeo.com/108460490[/ame])

It wouldn't matter if the car didn't appear at all (Oh, it hardly does;) ).....lovely video anyway.

On a another forum Tony and me contribute to there was a debate about the technique a while ago. I have been double declutching (and reversing trailers too) since shortly after passing my test 30 odd years ago and about half my cars in that time have had some degree of non-sycromesh; it's second nature to me

Thanks!

I've seen a video of an American fella on youtube doing it in a modern car and I understand the process, but have yet to try it successfully. I'm sure I'll get my head round it once I start driving.

Any tips, or is it one of those things you can't really put in words and just have to feel?

If you were coming up to a sudden sharp bend what would you do?

Is it bad to have the clutch down for too long in the 500? ...forgive my lack of knowledge!!!

Nice video.

Double declutching is simple once you get the hang off it. It's just a case of thinking ahead all the time. Anticipating when there are bends in the road and junctions coming up.

Changing up is fairly simple. Clutch down, into neutral, clutch up, clutch down into the next gear. Then clutch up again.

Changing down. Clutch down, into neutral, clutch up, blip the throttle to increase the engine speed, clutch down, change down. Then clutch up again.

So when I approach a junction I slow down using the brakes a bit, well before the junction, change down using double declutching from whatever gear I am in, then down again allowing the engine braking to do a lot of the work. Leave it in 2nd until I need to decide whether I need to come to a total stop. If I don't I leave it in second and accelerate away. If I do I then I do a quick double declutch and pop it into 1st or sometimes just stop in 2nd and pop it into 1st when stationary.

Tony

Here is my not quite as professional video of me driving back from the MOT station and I was getting my double declutching mixed up because I couldn't remember if to rev when changing up or down. Down of course.

It was taken with an iPhone in my hand as I tried to steer, naughty boy! Hence the poor quality but the car sounds ok. Apart from the occasional rattling you hear which is a box of spanners in the footwell, just in case!!! Well it hadn't been on the road for 17 years.

Nice one Tony!

That's super helpful. I'm hoping I'll make sense of it once I start running it around.

Do you drive yours through the Winter months? The body work on mine is pretty solid, no rust and the underneath has been sealed. Is it just the wet weather that people try to avoid? Or do you find the cold poses problems too?

...Me, Impatient?! Can't be waiting til Spring.

I would get the car out there in the winter whilst trying to avoid times when the roads have been gritted. I will be doing so this winter although I have been able to make sure that the car is as well protected as possible using wax and other compounds.
500s are almost a joke byword for rust so keeping it in the garage when not in use is a must in my opinion. But there's a lot to be said for regular use of a car as this jiggles about all the areas where water might be sitting and lets air and warmth drive out condensation.
What you're accidentally highlighting is that there are probably two broad bands of opinion on this with a spectrum of owners' attitudes. As with any classic car this ranges from concours people who just trailer the cars to shows down to real maniacs who blast around tracks in them.
I am at dead centre in my approach to using the car.

Yeah I agree Peter. Salt is the main problem on British roads and when it's not even cold enough for snow it will linger on damp roads. So if it is a crisp bright dry winters day I may venture out for a blast but I wouldn't if the road was damp.

My car is wrapped up in its winter home. It's an old stable but it has been refurbed with a new fibreglass roof and new timbers on the wall but it has ventilation above, from it's days as a stable to allow horsey smells out, so I don't get condensation in there. Plus it is covered in a breathable indoor cover.

I like the way, on one of the downhill sections, that your hand instinctively moves down to change up before the brain reminds it that there are no more gears to go. ;)

Looks like you had really good clear weather for driving around those quiet roads surrounded by magnificent scenery. :) Jealous!

cheers, Steve

Hi Peter, great video and your car looks and sounds the business. I was very interested to see your comment re the 'whine' in 1st. When you say that is normal you have answered a question I have had with my car, a 1st gear whine. If this is normal, as it sounded like mine, (126 Syncro box), perhaps I can stop worrying that something is wrong? Mind you, I will have a look at the gears next time the box is out just in case. She's not in 1st for very long to be fair. Once again thanks for some good info.

Cheers
Hugh Jarce
