It's a good habit to start everything with foot on clutch.

I start all cars and tractors with foot on clutch, and often brake in tractors also

a quick wobble of the gear knob, and start is more than sufficient. only if you were unsure of it being in gear or not, for example in a mk3 fiesta where wobbling it from side to side in gear is just as possible as neutral would it be worth putting your foot on the clutch.

interestingly my MG is reluctant to start with foot on clutch, but easy enough without foot on clutch..

Well I'm now permanently converted to the clutch-pushing cause. It sounds like a sensible thing to do, whether required or not.

Interesting theories about the brake alternative. I was theorising that it was to allow you to start while using the foot brake (e.g. a steep hill after it was left parked in gear), as it would be too much to expect you to shove both feet forward and turn the key at the same time. You'd only have one limb not involved in starting the car.

Still doesn't mean Golfs aren't dull and over-priced though.

That's a somewhat breathed on Golf and hardly representative of the average models though. The other 99% of Golfs on the road have much more humble drivetrains and are in comparision.

4motion whilst quite brilliant loses some of the overall power through its drivetrain - the Scirocco is well set up and doesn't need 4motion, even the upocoming 260PS R version doesn't need it .

i parked next to a new one in york yesterday.... was a 1.4/1.6 though and had wheeltrims... and i did think to myself about how its probably near enough as expensive as my car

if i were to have one it would have to be the gti though or the 170 tdi

Don't understand why many people hate Golfs.

Some of the accusations don't hold water, either - I spent ages looking at company car options about 18 months ago - and found that Golfs came in significantly cheaper than the equivalent Focus, same with the Passat / Mondeo.

I know you can get some big discounts on new Fords - but company car drivers are taxed on list price and Ford have shot themselves in the foot there.

As an example, I ran a Focus 1.6TDCI Style Estate for a few months - the list price was higher than that of a Golf 1.9TDI SE, despite the Focus coming with significantly less equipment.

You can buy a BMW 116d for less money than a Focus 1.6TDCI these days.

Given a choice, I'd have a Bravo, though, but they're not an option, sadly. (Had a Bravo for a week when my Passat broke down a couple of years ago and loved it)

Yes but that's all a moot point for the private buyer who wants something interesting.

Personally I'd take a Bravo any day because I'm not going to get rid in 2 years like everyone else so residuals don't come into it. German cars are completely souless.

Why do you see so many 1/2 year old Golfs available? Because the owner has actually topped themselves due to becoming mind-numbingly bored at the wheel.

I had a Ibiza which is a slightly more exciting polo... it was still pretty boring compared to the Tipo it replaced.
