Noticed Patches on the driveway when coming back from a drive, all i can think is when the car is running the oil heats up and gets thinner, making it prone to leak though small cracks and holes which cannot be seen,

the two dimples at the bottom of the oil sump is actually oil, i wiped this off afterwards, also the top left leaks oil.

not sure if i need a replacement :/

Hi there , yes could be the sump leaking as this is a common problem . Also check the camcover gasket as this could leak down the engine too .

oil when hot becomes thinner and can find its way out due to any oil pressure and its been lower viscoity

wheres its clean is where
the oil pump sits, the crank seal, the sump, oil filter housing

you need to observe where its coming from

rockers do leak but usually more of a weap

that front face needs some tlc as well.... its getting corroded and flaking
get the worat off and spray it up to protect

i used silver because its all i had but it quickly showed i had an oil leak as well.....

A new sump maybe a good option since it was corroded abit

However its not an easy feat, you will need to remove the exhaust manifold to allow access to remove it
As well as an engine to gearbox brace and cover - still simple DIY nuts and bolts tho

If you drop the sump = Time for an oil change too!

Had the pleasure of doing the sump change on my daughters Punto a couple of years back. Definately doable for the DIY doer. The sumps go porous because the are pressed tin - in simple terms a bit like a baking tin. Thinking back I think I paid around the £40 mark for the new sump plus a tube of the heat resistant red polymer sealant. You'll need extension bars and long reach deep sockets to make the job easier. The worst part was getting the old sump off, took a bit of presuading with a rubber mallet to break the seal. Of course, you'll need to clean off all the old seal from the engine block to ensure you get a good seal when you put the new sump on. If I remember it took me approx 3 hours and thats with the car jack up on axle stands and laying on my back.

When engine running the crank webs throw oil up in the sump a bit like an old Louisiana paddle steamer going up the mississippi this is why sump leaks whenst having had a drive because you normally find the sump has corroded at the upper high tide mark on the dipstick

If you look at your picture it looks as if its leaking from the crank pully end of the sump , and just leaking down

it seems to be in that area yea

Weither its the crank pulley seal or the sump, no real way of knowing, since they are sooo close

might be just worthwhile doing both....

I have the exact same leak, its not massive, so im not too worried

i cant make head nor tail of that photo

Sump1.JPG

its faint the shine / rundown to me which i've highlighted in RED
but my worry is how much the blue rust there is - means where else has possibly started and possibly leaking out of sight?

And yes - the red does look like a knob
