Yep def a cable...

Alan - That's a pic of the gear linkage, not the clutch cable that you have there...

Still useful to look at though. (y)

I think all the Punto's had hydraulic clutch. Not sure why Fiat went to cable on the B. Definitely explains the rarity of replacement part....

Cheers

Evening...

Small steps tonight...

- some hammeriting of various rusty metalwork

- removed the RH driveshaft. Interesting that all 4 boot clips had been replaced by cable ties at some stage in the cars past. I'm just deciding whether I can be a%s€d to dismantle this driveshaft as well and replace CV grease, boots and clips. I guess the answer is "oh, alright then..." :nutter:

- Started undoing the three bolts that hold the starter motor on to the gearbox bellhousing. I got one bolt out from underneath the car. The other 2 are visible from above, but are obscured by wiring loom, heater pipes, inlet manifold, throtle body, more wiring, etc. Gave up at this point as I think I may need to take the throttle body off and disconnect the heater pipes to stand any chance of getting at these bolts. Have a look next time you are under the bonnet of your B. They are a complete s*d to get to. If anyone has any sugestions I would be most grateful as always.

More time on it tomorrow night.

You can get them from the top but its slow progress i.e a quater turn at a time, its a complete bitch. You done the right thing in undoing the bottom bolt first because if you do it last you have all the weight on it so it becomes a right pain in the ass (as I found out:bang: ).

You've stripped it all now so it would be a false economy not to replace the boots and re-grease, sods law one will go soon if you don't bother.

DanGil - when the three starter motor bolts are undone does the starter stay where it is? I.e. is there a 4th bolt somewhere or is it going to fall off when I take out the last bolt?

It did'nt fall when I done it, but I did it the wrong way round

Morning all...

got the starter motor bolts out. I undid the bolts for the throttle body so I could shift it out of the way -

Then getting the top 2 starter motor bolts off was relatively easy.

Can someone take a pic of the routing of the throttle cable from the body forwards and post it up please (probably not Doc cos you've got the green air thingy). Ta (y)

Clutch cable arrived from Italy via Grays Fiat in Warwick (excellent service, by the way) along with the bits needed to rebuild the LH driveshaft.

I'm now going to fit the clutch cable and see if the notchyness is still there. IF it is, then gearbox out. If it is cured then I'm putting her back together...

Sorry to disapoint but funds and time are running short.

Without wishing to jinx things I seem to have got everything I need from Fiat eventually. Helps having top blokes in the parts department at Grays in Warwick (Matt and Paul in case anyone needs to contact them).

The one thing you can't get anymore is an outer CV joint outer clip (i.e. the big one nearest the wheel) so I'm having to improvise (big cable ties :yuck: ).

Everything else seems to be available...
