Hi guys,

I have a Lancia Thema 2.0 i.e. 16v with Jetronic EFI and Digiplex.

I raced the car with a BMW 530D, and I managed to keep pace with it.

Problem is I blew the head gasket. Can anyone please indicate how the balance shafts should be aligned and what mods can be done to increase the BHP since the head is going to come out?

One last thing, I would like to the ECU since the jetronic setup has a flow restrictor on the intake side. Does anyone know how this can be done and if it is possible to get a harness and ecu from somewhere?

Thanks

Ryan

to get more power without spending loads of money is to stick a turbo lump in there. taking out the balance shafts will give you a few extra bhp though not a lot. how much power does it put out as standard with the jetronic?

Regarding the cam about 600gbp, rplabs I think around 500 € (but not checked), plus fitting shimming, belts and maybe cam wheels I'd say 1500 + mapping at about 300. I still think it would make 180bhp FW figure. Without the rempa it wont be any good.

this is from the tipo section when discussing how to increase power in the 16v unit. it works out cheaper just to get a turbo lump. in your case the thema came with a 16vt so if you were to get one the insurance is cheaper compared to with the substantial modifications you'd need to carry out to get anywhere near the same levels of power.

The BMW was being driven by a taxi driver, who stopped to ask what i had under the bonnet....you know in Malta we are like that.

The Thema has 150bhp as standard. I was thinking that removing the jetronic restriction could gain some bhp together with some porting and increasing the compression ratio.

Hi guys,

I am thinking of removing the belt which turns the balancer shafts, as i read that this should make the engine rev more easily.

Do i need to lock the shafts, and if yes how can this be done?

Do the shafts physically contact the crank?

Thanks in advance!

You're better off going onto a Lancia forum, Martin (chippy) on there sells balancer shaft removal kits, not cheap but excellent quality plus thicker cam belts kits that should have better life and not snap like OE items can.

any idea how mucho the removal kits are roughly?

i understand it's ok to run with the belt off and the shafts still in but isn't the best thing for long term.

I do not know....to me it seems that the counter rotating shafts will be putting force upon the bottom end as these will be trying to dampen the vibrations using rotational energy from the crank.....

I don't understand. How will they be "putting force" on the bottom end?. They simply counter rotate and reduce engine vibration (pretty well actually). The only thing it may cause additional stress on would be the cambelt and tensioner due to the extra dead weight it has to move when revs climb.

There are a fair few people who run without the balancer shafts as you may or may not know it is generally a failure of the balancer shaft belt that takes out the cambelt causing catastrophic failure on these cars, its never usually the cambelt that fails itself.

Some folk leave them in there and lock them in place, some just leave, other prefer to remove them but a blanking plate must be made/purchased to blank off end and keep the oil in.

Chippy's kit for running wider 25mm cambelt is about £350, but then if doing yourself that's still cheaper than a cambelt change at a specialist with uprated items, his balancer shaft removal kit I believe is about £150 and is offered in both standard 19mm cambelt size, or 25mm to match his kit. If you become paid up member of Club Lancia Sport I believe he does discounts, otherwise he sells on ebay as Delta-parts http://stores.ebay.co.uk/delta-parts

The differance in the way the engine runs in terms of smoothness is nearly inperceivable, in fact many say they can tell no differance, power wise don't expect much, 2-3bhp at most, but car will rev a bit cleaner as less rotating mass.
