That is def a bearing

The FIRE heads don't have separate bearings. And this is not a bearing related noise. I am pretty sure that it wasn't assembled correctly.

Castrol Recommends for Sporting engines:

10w40 Magnatec, or 0w30 Edge (other applications it says 5w30).

Usually at work we are told that you shouldn't deviate from the top number i.e 40, my mate used 5w40 in his sporting and it stopped the tapping noises.

Edge 0W-30 (r,s) 2.8 Magnatec 10W-40 A3/B3
(from castrol websites).

I don't care what Castrol recommends and I avoid Castrol. The second number of the viscosity index is the less important number for most applications unless you run a turbo engine.

The FIRE 16v engines aren't to be used with any 10w oil and Castrol can't change this. It has been known to the entire industries for about 10 years that a 5w is needed. I am not surprised that this slipped Castrol's attention.

Castrol has never let me down. It's better than cheap Halfords/Wilco/Asda/Tesco's crap.

Castrol is up there with Sikolene, Mobil, and Motul.

It has let us down big time. And who are you to tell what the quality of Tesco or Asda oil? Their oils are just re-branded oils from the like of Texaco, Esso etc.

How good Castrol is tells what Mountune have done some years ago with them. They dropped them as a supplier for their WRC work in favour of Texaco.

And Mobil1 is by definition also a re-branded oil as it has not been developed by Mobil.

ok call me thick but what is a FIRE engine and if there is no bearings ??? then what is taking the strain of the cam when taught ?? surely its not going round and around in a metal to metal hole in the head ??? must be somert there as in a bearing or sleeve like big end bearing type ??
might just take it apart my self and have a look

ohh and i can assure you it was assembled correctly no doubts about it
this noise has only started ever since i took it in for an M.O.T (it passed 4th time around ) and i didn't really hear it till i got it home cos i was listening to my music

I have got only about 15 8v FIRE heads in my garage and none of them has got bearing shells or any other kind of bearing. Neither had the ones that I modified nor any I ever have seen on any car. And noone in the factaory where they are being produced has seen any bearings in them either, because they haven't.

It is common practise for heads to be just line bored without having any shells.

Just out of curiosity - with the cam belt off, can you get the camshaft to move side ways in the head ? if so you may need new camshaft caps or if there is too much wear a new camshaf and caps.

cam shaft caps ??? now im confused i am told by dealers that there are bearings then by another dealer sleeve bearings and auto parts say no bearings lol and now camshaft caps ??? caps as in oil seals ??

Cam caps are properly known as camshaft bearing caps.

Ok when the camshaft is placed in the cylinder head the camshaft caps hold it in place to the head. There are machined parts of the head, the camshaft and the caps as well - there are no bearing shells if that makes sense there are just the caps which due to the machined surface are the bearing.

If for some reason wear has occured on these machined surfaces then the camshaft could move slightly side to side - hence when you pressed against it, it was held in the right place untill it moved again.

i think the reason for the wear is that the person who did the cam had done it to tight

dont go thinking that you can fit new caps to your head though, that wont work.

they normally wear because of blocked oil feed

Right I would change the oil and see if there is any swarf/bits of metal in there also invest in a torque wrench if you havent already as they are essential to have when assembling things like this.
