Hi i whipped off the wheel to take a look this evening,as you say it seems if the bearing is sezeing up , when the steering is turned the top of spring twists a bit then shoots back in line as it should be, the other side is as free as a bird.
Ok sprayed oil up there but no good looks like a strip out job. what make of spring compressors should i buy, and when i get in will the bearing come apart to lube? or will i have to replace them. if so where would i get them and how much.
Unless you are a competent mechanic, it's not really a DIY job. The coils of the spring are of varying diameters and pitch, so normal hook on spring compressors are not suitable. You need professional compressors as in the picture below.
There's also a picture of the bearing. The cut out in the bearing must be lined up with a cutout in the top mounting and also with a hole in the suspension turret.
If you are confident about mechanical strip + rebuild there is a guide (dark blue bar top of page below FF banner) for removing the strut, BUT as Davren says it can get a bit scarey compressing the springs with ordinary compressors ( I bottled it and bought a second set £20 halfords), https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-guides/101535-removing-front-strut.html
I bottled it too, I had normal spring compressors and recovery straps with ratchets around mine, but still looked as though the spring was going to ricochet around my garage.
I borrowed professional spring compressors from a local garage and no problems, just a bit tricky getting all the reference marks to line up.
Job finaly done guys thanks for the help it took five weeks to get the parts due to the fact the fiat dealer ordered in the top mounting not the bearing i was not happy when the post came:bang: Rang fiat reordered made the 80 mile round trip to collect the bearings and return the mountings only to be told they wouldnt take them back....typical.
so this evening i took and fitted them put in the mountings seeing as i had them new brake pads too it all worked out handy used ordanery clamps too . all i need now are oil seals for the gearbox and she is sorted.
so again thank you:worship:
