Kinda O/T, problem with punto TD

my sister has a punto TD and the turbo has gone, its blowin black smoke at the moment, according to the garage she went to its gonna cost her £500 for a new turbo unless she goes to a scrap yard for another turbo, what i need to know is, is goin to cost her £500 or would it cost less other than goin to the scrappies

the trouble with turbos are that they are expensive. They are a very delicate piece of mechanics. I guess the £500 is about right. Most companies/garages do it on an exchange basis, ie you give old turbo, you get back a recondition one for about half price, so 250 maybe! Going to a scrappers, you are never sure if a turbo has been thrashed so may be worse. Be cheaper to get a high performance one
