Hi there. I'm a newbie. Recently when using my key in the ignition it doesn't want to turn, can take up to ten minutes before the key will turn. I have central locking but only have 1 blue key that has no buttons (don't know if that makes a difference). Definitely need another key done, so I was wondering if I do have to go to fiat or is there a way of doing it yourself? Thanks, Jess.

Hi Jess,

assuming your car IS a MK2 (v reg to '04),
your key has a CHIP in it that is read by an "aerial "at the lock barrel,
so if you want a new key ,
you'll need the CODE number ( 4 digit) to set the key's chip to,

apparently timpsons can do this from @£40,

if you don't have the key code card / number it CAN get expensive,

maybe get a good key place to cut you a new BASIC key with NO CHIP ( @£8) , and see if it works better in you ign. barrel,

Charlie

Is the 4 digit code located on the key I have (1 letter 3 numbers) or on the car anywhere. As I don't have any of the cars paperwork. I have been offered a new barrel and key for the car off a friend. How hard would it be to signal that key with the car?
Thanks

the problem with that is the code will not match the code stored on the computer so it will fail to start:( e.g. you will get the code warning light,
in order to do a change over you will need a full lock set with barrel plus fuse box and ecu, which as charlie said it does get expensive if you dont have the code!
so your two options either go fiat and get a new key done or do above change locks, barrel, fusebox and ecu.

Surely there's a way to reprogramme the key to the cars ecu. I understand I'd need to keep my old key for the doors

FIAT UK do keep a record of all the CODE numbers for each car,
they SHOULD be able to supply a new card ( with your vehicles unique number) for a less pricey fee,

BUT my 1st choice would be a basic £8 key, THAT will do all the wear + tear stuff,
your "proper" key can then be saved,

Timpsons are still worth a try for @£40,
Charlie
