Karbine's Golf Mkiv.

Introduction

Hey guys. As some as you know I sold my Punto mk1 and decided I wanted something different altogether. Something a little more luxurios spec wise and a nice interior.
So onwards and upwards I searched for a mkiv Golf.
Found one and picked it up last night from Newcastle with my Dad and Matty1303 from here.

It's got 104k on the clock and I paid £1250 in the end.
Paint work is pretty shabby but I'm not really that fussed. It's a 1.6 8v S (100ps) and has electric adjustable heated door mirrors, 5 doors with electric windows all round, PAS, adjustable steering wheel, 4 air bags, ABS steel wheels FTW! lol

I've got a few things planned but I'm not going to the extent of what I did with the mk1.
Plans are; Lower 45 or 50mm, OEM alloys maybe GTI or something (going to do a P/shop to see what they would look like gloss black), Debadge the rear and get a smaller Sharan badge and paint that black. Paint front badge too. And fit the box so that I have remote central locking rather than standard central locking. Maybe some other suggestions would be good :)

Anyway,, pics....

Steve, I totally agree with you when you say you don't see the point in spending a fortune modding cars when you could buy a higher spec, smoother, more comfortable car instead. That is because we are OLD (in terms of modding anyway).
However, I personally like to look at the efforts of others and admire the work that goes into these modifications. Some of the tacky mods, like gullwing doors on a Punto etc, really make me **** myself, but the guy you're picking on here isn't the sort of numpty to abuse a car like that - his mods are tasteful and give the car an individual appearance without being OTT.

Being a public forum, your opinion are welcome. However, bringing down a young lad (who is a popular member of this forum btw), for wanting to spend a bit of money on his hobby, and for choosing a 5door Golf, is a bit uncalled for to be honest.

Karbine, I wish I had a car as good as yours when I was your age. I had to put up with an old Metro that burst into flames whenever it felt like it. Also I know you'll do a good job - looking forward to seeing the pics(y)

I've ran out of thanks for today but cheers for that mate. :D

good luck with the mods... im a firm believer of:

if you own somthing do what you want to it, everyones entitled to there own opinion but at the end of the day you own and drive it so do what you like to it (y)

p.s.... i hope to hear from your dad soon on what your doing in life :D

well if the red mk1 is anything to go by surely a year from now at most this golf will be soemthing of a masterpiece. I really loved ur mk1 and was gutted to see it gone without actually seeing it. Love your plans dan, "down and out" and "you were right to go lower" spring to mind.

We wouldnt be cento bashing again would we Mike?!

Not for the first time either

It is pretty obvious that you arent a fan of them but no need for another slight O/T or to stir the pot on this thread, i know you have had a bad experience with an owner of a cento, but the little digs are become tiresome now

Karbine - good luck mate

Lol nothing to do with any of that. I just find it funny that someone is slagging someone off for modifying a cheap car when they are doing the same to an even cheaper one.

What do you mean the little digs are becoming tiresome now. The problem I had was with a member at no point did I mention the car he drove :ROFLMAO:.

Find me 3 examples of me having a dig at centos/cinqs and I will not class your post as utter ****......

had a little go at a photoshop

I think you should de-grill the front mate, between the headlights de-grille and debadge that section it should pop out and get a mesh grill.

Just get a degrill section and attach your own thin black mesh to blend it in so doesnt stand out too much(y)

Thats just my opinion mate, if you like then go for it mate.

Iv seen one thats well better than that degrill section but you get the idea mate, one i saw was well good and tidy it was a black golf with red theme on it and the owner had a degrill section that was more square ish than this and had a red border on the recess looked well good.

Or jus debadge if you want mate:

And I call bull****e on the modifications lowering selling on price, I bought my punto for £250 and sold it for £800! They lower the price if it is modified to the users complete taste, but subtle upgrades improve the selling on price... Fact. As demonstrated by me a few weeks ago! Sure i spent about £1200 on it but I had a lot of fun and have learned alot of things from doing this sort of stuff.

A bit of a contradiction, don't you think? You bought the car cheap, got £550 more for it, but it cost you £1200 to get there. I make that a £650 loss. Ergo, the cost of your upgrades outweighed your gain. I don't call that improving your selling price. As with just about all modified cars you lose money on selling.

IME cheap suspension comes across as that; cheap. My brother's old Corsa was on cheap springs. He had them fitted for a fortnight before he wanted to change.

FYI, electronic bulletin boards have been around since the 80s.

Mike, I think you've missed the point a little. He's not slagging off modding a cheap car. What he's saying that is spending money on an absolute base model (which this is) is a little bit of a false economy. Also, his Cinq and this Golf are two different kettles of fish. One is being built purely for go, so the fact that it's basic, has no toys etc is immaterial. The other is being built for a more showy car (OK, not a pure show car, but you know what I mean).

Also, some of the very best skilled people work with Dubs. It would have to be absolutely perfect with no flaws to be noticed.

Best of luck to you. I personally don't like 5 door Mk4s but if it makes you happy, then so be it.

Spot on chaos.

It's going to be very hard to improve on the standard Golf without spending proper money - any cheap mods will just make it worse to live with on a daily basis - all to 'look good'.

I haven't said 'don't modify' - just be a little more careful about the mods applied.

No. It's not a contradiction at all. Steve or whatever his name is clearly stated that modifying your car "dramatically" lowers the selling on value. I was proving that it doesn't. I never ever once said that I made a profit on the car. Which I didn't, hell not even close! I wasn't stating that you make your money back at all...

That's news to me!

Again you're wrong! The E is the base model, not the S with no electric windows, no heated wing mirrors, no central locking, no electric adjustable wing mirrors, no alarm So maybe you should have done a little more research before exclaiming that statement?! flol

And that sir is what it boils down to :) ^

ugh, so GTI rear lights, colour coded badges, smaller aerial from a Sharan, GTI steering wheel, and ETC are just going to make it worse to live with on a daily basis?
