need some advice here please.
Seems no matter what i do i cant stop my sub from sounding distorted at high volumes.I dont think it's blown.
I have a 200w 12 " sub enclosed,running off a 240 w 2ch amp,so setups fairly straightforward.
Can i ask what HU & amp settings you guys use or suggest.
Tried turning gain down, bass at HU down, treble up on amp, bass up at HU......cant seem to get the right setting to get the best from the sub.
Any ideas please.
Peter

yes,to be honest I thought that too,but all seems intact.
Could be just a shitty sub, perhaps?

What sub?

Are you SURE the box is airtight? Around the connector plate, around the speaker etc..

Tom
in that case not sure about airtight.
What can i do to ensure this?is it just a visual check ?
Is only a CT Sounds crappy thing..

Cheers

Play some music and feel with your hands around the edge of the speaker and the box.

It could just be a naff speaker but leaks can sound very loud.

Turn it down.. ruduce the bass...

My bedroom speakers clip wen I put too much power through them... well the amp clips and the speaks make a horrid cracking noise.

Just need to ruduce the power to them... are you running a Low Pass Filter to them??

Thers not much you can do..... I've tried with my speakers in my room!

If the amp is clipping then you have not got enough power.

Get the sylicon out! go round all the inside edges of the box and the terminal plate. if that dont cure it put sylicon round the sub put all the screws in but 1 then push the cone in with your hand whilst holding the sub put the last screw in! the sub should slowly move back to its normal position. now have a blast and see if it clips

the reason it is cliping is beacuse the coil inside the sub is moving out too far! so by creating a vacume inside the box it restricts the sub from moving out so far curing the over exertion problem!

Cheers for the advice guys, but as far as the setup is concerned theres no reason to think that amp/sub power match is at fault here..?

Check the box then worry about the amp. The fact it makes noise no matter what you do makes me think its the box.

The sound of the voice coil hitting the back plate is VERY distinct and starts very suddenly and is VERY loud. (remember speakers go IN as well as out)

Amp clipping is more subtle. The easy way to check is to use an scope on the amp output and see the waveform.

Tom
looking at it this lunch hour i think you could be right about the voice coil hitting the back plate. As I slowly push the sub in I can feel what i think is the plate on the back of it.Can you suggest anything please..?

Thanks a lot
Pete
