Hey, a local garage has overfilled my car when doing an oil change.

I bought 5 litres of Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel (fully synthetic) 5W40 and know the engine capacity is 4,7 but the guy put the whole thing in there and the oil is over the max mark on the dipstick.

Since they did this the oil light now turns on every time the key is in the ignition position 1 and stays on continuously until i start the engine, which it then goes out.

Do you think the overfilling has caused the engine oil light to come on?

I took the car back and they (predictably) said it was fine. They have already lied to me once before causing me not to trust them so i hope to f**k that they havent damaged the engine.

Thanks for any help!

you mean oil pressure light?
this is standards behavious
you have no pressure until the engine fires and the pump buiolds pressure
I assume you have drained the oil?
how far over the max are we talking?

if the engine ran after putting 5 litres in its not a problem... put it this way they have put 300ml more oil in than recommended (about a mug full more)and when its sat in the sump that's maybe 5mm on the dipstick no engine designer in their right mind would design an engine to nuke itself if the oil level was slightly high. if it runs dont worry about it, it will most likely 'breath heavy' at worst untill the oil level drops

not much over max, half a centimetre maybe. not drained the oil as wated to see what the deal was - if it could cause problems.

the oil light didn't stay on before (oil change), it would go out after a few secs like all of the other pre-ignition check lights.

so you think its cool just to leave it?

i'm just really pee'd off with the garage. I was going to do the oil change myself but the sump plug head was screwed up (sump plug tool wouldn't undo it as the socked pretty much fell apart - made of low quality metal) so i got a garage to do it. They quoted £15-£35 max, but eneded up charging me over £80!

I supplied all oil and filter, new sump plug and washer - they said it took over an hour to do. Lame. Anyhow, then after telling them the engine required 4.7 litres when i cam to pick up the car both bottles were empty (4&1ltr's). Annoyed! They said it would be fine as the engine would easily take 5 litres.

I hope it doesn't damage the engine!

this light? (but in red)

thats the oil pressure light.

afaik there isnt a level sensor on the JTD.

im willing to say that maybe you just didnt realise it before but this light will always be illuminated when the ignition is on and the engine isnt running.

as said before no harm will come of overfilling buy 300ml and as long as that light goes out when the engine is running then its not a problem

their is an Oil level sensor on the jtd which displays when the ignition is first turned on

From the manual;

LOW ENGINE OIL
PRESSURE (red)
EXHAUST OIL (red)
(Multijet versions with DPF)
Low engine oil pressure
Turning the ignition key to MARthe
warning light turns on, but it should go out
as soon as the engine is started.
The display will show the dedicated mes-
sage.
v
Exhaust oil
(Multijet versions with DPF)
The warning light with turn on flashing
when the system detects that the engine
oil is exhaust.
After the first indication, at each engine
starting the warning light vwill go on
flashing for about 1 minute and then every
2 hours until oil is changed.
The display will show the dedicated mes-
sage.

No, the jtd has an oil level sensor that displays on the dash when the ignition is on, it shows oil level, I'll get a picture of mine soon

Is it the same as that light? That's what the OP is saying stays on.

Let me explain it slowly: Engine off = no oilpump driven. No oilpumpdriven = no oilpressure. No oilpressure = oilpressurelight on. = at "MAR"position on and engine on is lamp off.
Only relation between oilpressure and the amount of oil is when the level is too low for the pumppickup.

Ohh and that's for all cars.

Hey, a local garage has overfilled my car when doing an oil change ...

While a marginal over-fill may not be an immediate problem - be aware that the oil level can rise over-time with a DPF (should you have one) due to the regen process causing diesel to find it’s way into the sump.

My JTD always shows the oil level in a series of OOOOO's that are filled-in black after i've turned on the ignition & it's said 'Checking' on the display. I thought i'd read in the manual that it'd say Oil Level High or HI on the display if it's really full, though i don't have my manual to hand.

Mine also shows 'Insufficient Oil Pressure' on the occasion that i've stalled it, so i'd imagine the Stilo would have a way of telling you if it's not happy with the oil situation.

That said, if you're really uncomfortable then just drain a drop off, though as others have said i can't imagine such a small amount will cause harm & if it's hardly above the MAX on the dipstick then i'd personally not be too bothered.

EDIT: I don't pay a huge amount of attention to my oil light but i know it comes on when i switch the ignition on and i think it goes out just after the engine starts. As long as nothing illuminates during driving & the gauge shows the correct level (it's pretty accurate on mine) i tend not to worry.
