I handed my car keys to bar man over the weekend and he lost them so im using red key will this do anything to my car and how much does it cost 4 a new set thanx in advance 4 replies fellas

Genuine Fiat replacement key (with built in alarm key fob) about £80

cheers mate but will it actually do anything to the cars ecu or anything like that

The red key?

They just advise not to use it too regularly.

Not sure if there's a technical reason behind it or whether it makes your car more vulnerable in the eyes of insurance.

Alrite mate thanks for input guess ill have to get a new set pretty sharpish

take your red key to a good locksmith, i paid £20 for a new key with the chip programmed as well and never had any probs with them.

they recommend not using the red "Master" key all the time in case you lost it. if you do lose it it usually means a new code unit etc for a few hundred quid

Mmmmmmmmmm not a good idea to do so then me thinks cheers..

Don't get the red key copied at a locksmith, you will just have another Red Key then. Go to fiat and get a new blue key (or two if you can afford it) and program them into the ECU using the Red Key. If you've got the Red key then do it properly.
;)

i'm confused barakka? what is different about the locksmith method i suggested? you've got me curious now :)

I lost my only blue key &Fiat dealer quoted me £100 for a new blue key. They also tried talking me into having ecu reprogrammed & a new red key etc etc!! I got my red key copied at Timpsons, its an imitation bravo key, not the official dealership version but it works fine. It doesnt have central locking but Timpsons did it for free for me so i cant complain!

Piggin Red Keys LOL !

Every blue key has a unique ID which cannot be changed. The ECU keeps a list of the IDs which are allowed to start the ignition. The Red Key resets the list and is used to add or remove the ID of a blue key.

SO if you lose a blue key you buy a new one from Fiat (some dealerships apparently will sell you one uncut and you get the metal cut at a locksmiths to save cost) and use the Red Key to add it to the list, at the same time removing the lost one, so the lost key will open the doors but NOT start the ignition.

If you take a key to timpsons to get it done they will make a duplicate INCLUDING the ID, so if you take your Red Key you are getting another Red Key with an identical ID irrespective of what colour plastic it has on it. This means that if you lose it you cannot delete it, and every time you do use it it is resetting the list.

There are rumours that this constant resetting can cause ECU problems - RUMOURS...

My thought is that if you have the Red Key then do it properly and get a key from Fiat. Yes they may want £80 for one with a remote, but timpsons want £20 for the key with no remote, and then a replacement copy remote will be another £30.

ah now i understand, cheers for that!

if i remember right wheni went to the locksmiths i always had copies made of my blue keys which should be ok i take it. ie not resetting the ecu all the time then?

timpsons can only clone whatever key you give them. surely the barman is paying for the replacement?

Is it OK to drive with Red Key?

I was told that the Red Key should only be used for Servicing/Reprogramming etc.
Evidently the Red Key is only designed to be used 1200 times during the life of the car.
No doubt that is debatable, but I'd be inclined to fork out for a Blue Key rather than risk frying the ECU!

codes

bravo 2.0 20v blue key snapped in boot one red key no codes alarm don't work and can't open doors with keys so left open alnight any help would be nice.

Re: Is it OK to drive with Red Key?

As it happens, we've just got a new blue key (with remote alarm) from FIAT for our HGT. The part number is 0735250934, price 43.93 + vat. It's supplied blank, so got to get it cut at the local locksmith. It was mail order from Desira, see http://www.desiragroup.com or tel (01379) 650131.

Re: Is it OK to drive with Red Key?

have to ask (being a dense type) i managed to buy a bravo without a red key last september, its still in good order (remote central locking failed but thats about it). it does need a service and a cam-belt change very soon and after asking at a fiat dealership whether they could source a new red key i was told flatly that the could "no longer get them for bravos"
im pretty sure they were just trying to fob me off but i have to wonder:

a) exactly HOW important is it to have the red key in terms of servicing (what procedures would require a red key)

b) would disconnecting the battery mean i need to start the car with the red key or are the immobiliser codes still stored

c) would a fiat specialist (non franchised) be able to get hold of a red one? if so who?

Re: Is it OK to drive with Red Key?

New Red key - comes as a package with new engine immobiliser, new locks all round and two new blue keys.
Roughly 800 spondoolies

Re: Is it OK to drive with Red Key?
