Surely you must have seen what i think about jap. And as for german:
BMW have nasty electronic problems, chew rear subframe mounts, hgs, warp heads etc. Not a particurarly great car
Mercedes rust if you look at them and can be very costly to keep running
vags smash cv joints, make terrible engines and have various electronic problems (non winding electric windows, lighting issues etc) the "bulletproof" 1.9tdi ofthen suffers from turbo failure, egr failure, injector failure, waterpump failure and are a failure of failures. The 2.0tdi likes to starve itself from oil as the oil pump likes to fail.
Why havnt i mentioned the rest? Havnt got anywhere have they...

And dont think for a minute im being biased, i had 3 BMWs and theres 2 Mercs at our house, not to mention all the BMWs, Mercs and vags ive worked on.

I dont know what oil you use but your obviously using the wrong oil as we even put 0w40 in a Punto several times and it never drank it down.

Do some research before you promote/slate a particular car (y)
 
Probably heresy to say this but Im sure petrol engines would benefit from using turbo diesel 0-40 oil. The lower peak pressures inside a petrol engine wont stress the oil and the dirt suspension additives also wont have to work so hard.

A punto 1200 burning oil has a problem - its not a "standard" fault unless its been 2x around the clock.
 
Fiat and VW worked together on the TDI/JTD diesel engines - explains why they both had 1.9x4 bangers and 2.4x5 bangers.

Fiat also developed the common rail fuel injection system for car engines, but sold it to Bosch. VW didnt want to use Bosch so developed their PD system.

Fiat's servo controlled auto gearbox is used by Ford

Bit of a gamble this but after a hefty amount of research I'm running a 10/40 full synth oil thats normally destined for trucks at work (bought some from our parts dept) and its been brilliant I have to say. I used a 5/40 for the winter we've just had (pretty cold I have to say this time) but did an oil service a few weeks back.

Motor nice and quiet from cold, keep checking the level every week but (fingers crossed again) its been great. No way am I leaving it in this long but apparently its left in trucks for about 100,000km :eek:

Still, very impressive stuff if thats what is recommended for trucks.

Pity my gearbox hasn't faired as well :mad:

Many trucks have oil bypass filters that take about 10% of the main flow but scrub out particles less than 10 microns (pm10s). These allow the special additives to last longer so the oil changes can be extended almost indefinitely with normal top-ups adding enough to make up the losses. The biggest issue is fuel dilution if an injector isnt ideal or engines left ticking over for long periods.

Back in my powerstation days we fitted bypass oil filters to the earth moving plant (used to shift coal stocks). Oil changes went from 45 gallons per week per TS40 scraper to changed after 10 weeks because we chickened out. The oil labs said the oil was still perfectly good.

I asked then about using them on cars but was told fuel dilution is too much of an issue especially on small diesels. Though in those days the only car diesels were non turbo peugeots.
 
my mk1 punto has been in my family since brand new, its been serviced regularly, its had its normal ware and tear on service parts, couple of bottom arms and h/g or two, but which car isn't. its been a very reliable and always been able to count on it, and it a quick engine and a fun car to drive
