There is also a battery operated one that is for sale - RRP £29.99 which you tune into an unused radio frequency and plug into the jack plug on your Ipod/MP3. They sell them in Halfords and PC World, also last week PC World had them on special offer at £24.99!!

Very interesting, I never knew such a thing existed. Has anyone ever used these? Big price differentials, is it a case of you get what you pay for? Would be very interested to hear of experiences with these gadgets.

I use a £6 one that is powered from the cig. lighter and it's fine.(y)

These things are a really neat idea, and I have a couple of colleagues who have used these quite sucessfully - but I was told by one that apparently they are 'illegal' as they are actually broadcasting on an FM frequency - so fall foul of some broadcasting permit law! I can, if I park next to my colleague's car tune my own radio into his ipod...

Although I understand where you are coming from with the legality of it being an FM broadcasting device, I am sure that companies such as PC World and Halfords who are selling them and advertising them in national newspapers would be selling a perfectly legitimate product.

Perhaps that is where the extra price comes from for a shop bought product opposed to one bought off of the internet, in terms of the manufacturer paying a licence for their products??!!

I have access to a national legal database at work, although mostly criminal based I will look to see if there is any mention of broadcasting legislation on it.

Ah, every day is a schoolday;)

The following link gives details of the proposed (it still seems as if it hasn't become law yet?) change: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/mofaq/rcomms/itrip/

The PC World site, out of interest has a disclaimer:
FM Transmitters/ Belkin TuneCast

Short range FM transmitters may not be used in the UK without a broadcasting licence.

but I guess the chances of getting nicked are pretty slim:D

Job done -i'm saying no more...
