Hey,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma - I have found a new car I want - and got a good insurance quote based on a one years no claims, the thing is my insurance is up for renewal on June 1st which is 2 weeks away but I am picking up my new car on Saturday (18th) and therefore having my new policy start on that date - my current insurance company has told me they won't send out my 1 years no claims till the 1st June.

My question is, I know it will take a few weeks before all the insurance is finalised on my new car - but do they ask for the no claims certificate straight away or have I got a couple of weeks saving grace?

I have a Fiat Brava at the mo - changing to an MX-5 hopefully on saturday!!

anybody help - or with similar experiences - I would be grateful as I am going mad!

Thanks

Craig

puzzled

I aint a goody goody, and I have been known to bend thefacts a little, but, if you take out a new one on 18/5 and you wont have 1 yrs no claim till 1/6..then strictly speaking, you wearnt telling the truth to your new insurance company............touch wood it wont happen, but suppose you had a bump inbetween 18/5 and 1/6 ??????

Patrick...

Thanks for the reply,

I wont be driving my old car after sat cos I'll be in my new car on my new policy, so if I have a bump it should be ok.

Its just a matter of whether I can wing it for 2 weeks or so

any other advice would be good

thats the point

Suppose you have a bump before the 1/6 in your new car...the company looks at your docs trying to wriggle out of paying, sees that you put down a full years no claims STARTING on the 18/5. which is before you actually had a full years no claims.

dates

anyone who has swapped insurance companies - could you tell me how long it is before the new insurers ask for a no claims certificate? - and is the years no claims dated?

Thanks

Craig

dated

Yes, the no-claims will inevitably be dated. It may take a while for the proof of no-claims bonus to come through, but when it does, you may have some problems with your new company: they'll see that the date doesn't match what you've told them.

They may try and sting you for some more money. It would be best to contact them now, and explain that you've made a slight mistake: they might be OK with it.

Re: dated

Hi,
Why not stay with your current insurers until the end of the policy.
They may charge you a nominal fee for admin for changing car details, and then just change to
a new insurer on the 1st of June.
When you take out a new policy they will ask your current insurers for verbal confirmation of the NCB before they give you a policy, so there are going to know the dates.
If they find you have been messing them around then they can refuse you insurance and your name will go in a database shared by all the insurers and then you'll be really screwed.

Craig

If you have an accident between starting your new policy and receiving your NCB from your existing company your policy will be invalid. It will be the same as driving with no cover at all.

Once you send your proof of NCB, your new company may pick up on the fact that you didn't have a full year on the date of inception of your new policy and get a 'bit funny' with you. On a more positive note, tell them the truth, they may say it's fine to do what you're asking.

But don't do nothing. It's your call at the end of the day, but for 2 weeks I honestly don't think it will be worth the hastle.

For my sins I work for an insurance company, believe me, they'll look for any reason not to pay your claim if you have one, or load your premium once they find out you've been telling porkie pies.

Hope this helps :)2

Thanks

Thanks for your help,

I have rung my new insurers and explained the situation, they wont allow the overlap - so I am either going to garage my new car for 2 weeks and let the policy run its course, or pay a bit extra this month for my new car and then when that ends I can run my new car on my new insurance

thanks

Craig
