Hi guys,

I changeId my cambelt, tensioner and water pump yesterday. I think it may be slightly incorrect as I think the engine sounds abit more metaly than usual. There is no real loss of power but there is abit or what seems like misfire however i noticed this on the way to my friends garage before doing it, this may be due to my exhaust blowing (so could the metally sound as I am driving with the window down trying to listen to signs its mistimed.

Is it possible to retime the 1.2 16v without removing the inlet manifold as it says in the haynes manual? I made cam locking tools as described and used dowel rods to check the height of the pistons.

Cheers

Sounds like a previously existing problem from your description, and not to do with your cam belt change. I'd have thought you could check the basic timing with a timing gun. Since the timing is controlled by an ECU, any misshaps would've been caused by putting the belt on a notch out, but if you locked it all up...

I locked it all up the only problem i can think of is that when fitting the belt we loosend the camshaft pully nut to allow the belt to slip on more easily then when we rotated the engine through two revs we noticed the belt wasnt sitting correctly and we resat it.I'm hoping that we didnt allow the camshaft pulley to turn while readjusting.
For piece of mind I want to take off, retime and put back together? Does the inlet manifold have to be taken off again as I found this very time consuming. Would I take off the belt completly and then turn the crank until pistons at mid point and then turn the camshaft pulley until the tools will lock in the groove?

I took the cambelt off and retimed the belt and the engine seemed fine. Today i have driven the car around and all was fine, I then got my exhaust mid and rear replaced as they were blowing. Everything seemed okay until tonight went out on the car and it started by the engine feeling like it was struggling to pull. Then when sat at lights it felt like there was a misfire, now im home i pulled the ht leads off each cylinder to see if the engine noise changed to see if any off the ht's werent firing but engine struggled for every time i removed the ht lead.
Any ideas? Is there anything that could have been done when the exhaust was being fitted? I'm hoping i didnt damage anything the first time the engine was timed however it was driving fine earlier.
cheers

Theres a few other wires around there which are quite fragile i found. Just replaced the wiring on the socket of the crankshaft position sensor (socket on the top of the cam cover) because i must've damaged it while fidling about. Are there vacuum hoses, and are they all on nicely, thats the sort of thing that can give symtoms as you describe in my (small not much punto) experience
