Panda Ignition Switch

Greetrings,

I have a 2009 Fiat Panda 1.1 engine European Spec as I live in Germany. My Panda just all of a sudden won't completely turn off the dash lights and heater. The engine turns off fine but the dash lights and the heater still stay on. Please see photo.

I even bought a used ignition switch thinking it was that. It replaced it and it still doing the same thing. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

A3jeroen, thank you for your fast response. I have to disconnect the battery every time I park the vehicle, if not it will kill my battery. In other words I disconnect the battery every day sometimes it will stay that way for days if I don't use the Panda.

Bodycomputer (behind the panel under the steeringwheel) can be completely disconnected, opened up and dried/cleaned. Done that once on my 100HP years ago. Had to check everything after the connector for the dipped beams was burnt out.

I have had two ignition switches fail

but only on not turning the starter on

right pain to change and very easy to damage

should be able to prove if its the ignition switch by pulling a fuse

I will get back when I understand which one

but I doubt it as its already been changed

the ignition switch goes to

F16 F24 F35 F42

in the engine bay


Assuming my wiring diagram is the same as your car. Fiat changed it about quite a bit


is there any electrical not working with the key out ?

does your car have climate control ?




junction box under the dash is protected by fuse F02
body computer by fuse F01
and the ignition switch by fuse F23

Thank you A3jeroen, I will check that and see. I haven't noticed any water inside the vehicle, but for sure will check it out.

koalar, Thank you for your response. WHen I turn the ignition key all the way to the off and pull it out, the lights work and the heater works. I haven't tried the wipers or anything else. I know the radio turns off. Also, if I disconnect the battery and plug it back up everything works normal until I start and turn off the car it goes back to the issue.

I’d remove the steering shroud, and then with the key removed and everything staying on, disconnect the plug into the ignition barrel and see if everything dies. If it does then it’s a faulty ignition switch unit.

already changed the switch. As its the first I have seen with this fault I doubt two switches will have the same fault

disconnecting the plug is a Good idea. Not sure which way to go next but I will be interested whether everything stay on or not.

I had this happen to me about 15 years ago, parked in the carpark at a supermarket switched off removed key and all the ignition lights were still on.
It turned out to be broken wire in the ignition switch wiring loom.

You may have seem my comment in your other thread. My 100HP was not pouring the OBD port. It's likely yours is not shutting it down. Swap out the OBD relay. Lift the engine bay fuse box to check the wires and see what happens.

I did all this and mine just started working again. I never found the real cause but suspect it was a relay fault.

You may have seem my comment in your other thread. My 100HP was not pouring the OBD port. It's likely yours is not shutting it down. Swap out the OBD relay. Lift the engine bay fuse box to check the wires and see what happens.

I did all this and mine just started working again. I never found the real cause but suspect it was a relay fault.

DaveMcT, Thank you, I have removed every fuse and checked to make sure they weren't burnt. All fuses were working and no issues. Now that I went through all that I am realizing it should be a relay not working properly. Per the suggestions up top once I turn off the engine the wipers, heater, window defrost, and windows work. Not sure what is going on.

I have attached the hand book and from page 161-165 talks about the fuse box and relays. Could you please let me know which relay I should be replacing?

doesn't the obdii get its power from the body computer via fuse 39

I never did bolt down the cause of my problems but they do sound similar to yours.

I really could not say which relay it is but the book does list all fuse and relays. IIRC, the OBD fuse is listed (and I think the associated relay). In my case, they all tested out ok. It's possible that disturbing them was enough to get things going again.

Pull and test every single fuse, under the dash and in the engine compartment. Do the same with relays. You can put a small 9V battery across the solenoid contacts to test the action. The OBD relay can be swapped with a similar one from another circuit. It's unlikely the fault will move but you never know.

if the gauges are working then body computer is powered up

the OBD is powered directly from the body computer via a fuse there's no relays involved

I am waiting to see what happens if they unplug the ignition switch

DaveMcT, I did pull every fuse from the engine compartment and inside and they were all good. I am going to pull every relay in the engine compartment and see if pulling them off and then back on will do something. Will let you know.

Edit: I pulled all the relays and nothing happened. Everything is still the same.

koalar, apologies as I didn't realize there was a second page to the thread. I turn on the Panda and pull the cables from the ignition and the Panda turned off.
