Technical Idler Pulley Bolt - Fiat Cambelt Kit 71736726 JTD 8v

Not sure of all the individual prices from Fiat without going into ePER again, but I know the belt alone is over £40.
.

The guy in the parts Dept this morning said the tensioner was £30, thats without bolt and washer.

If you go to Guildford, have a look at the forum events thread here: https://www.fiatforum.com/events/319372-auto-italia-brooklands-2013-a.html we will be at Brooklands for a show in May.
.

Ah great I'll take a look. I had a look around the Mercedes World museum at Brooklands recently, it was really good, been meaning to go have a look at the Brooklands and Concorde stuff sometime soon, not been there since the 80s!

I only asked where you were because I'll have spare bolts and washers in my garage from the previous times I've replaced my belt.
.

Ah thanks for the idea! If Fiat don't have them in stock tomorrow and have to order them in (i'll ring them in the morn) I could buy yours if you've got time to send them up tomorrow? Obviously I'll pay...

Well I spoke to my local Fiat dealer yesterday (Newport) and tried to order the bolt and washer total cost should be £2.39+VAT. Then they rang me back about 5 mins later and said they had to get the bolts in a bag of 10 and washers in a bag of 20 and they wouldn't split the bags so they wanted me to buy the lot, 10 bolts and 20 washers totalling £35!!! One thing after another!

I then spoke to the Hereford dealers and placed an order with them (Bit of a pain as its an 1.5hr round trip). They said bolt and washer should be with them by Thurs, no mention of bag splitting, but I am a bit nervous I'll get a phone call on Mon morn to say the same thing!

The dealers you've spoken to are partially correct, in that Fiat don't supply a timing belt kit for JTD 8v Stilos up to engine number 3646771 (fitted 15/05/2003). On ePER (the Fiat parts catalogue), this is shown as Modification number 6988. Items marked C6988 are up to that engine number and date, Items marked D6988 are for after it.

Item #15 (the kit), part number 71736726 is marked D6988, so is only suitable for the later engine numbers. The idler (item #3), the bolt (item #4) and the washer (item #12) are all different for before and after engine number 3646771.

As far as I can make out, you would need to buy the later bolt, part number 55190553, and the later washer, part number 55190554, to be able to use your new kit.
.

How come neither Fiat dealer I spoke to could tell me this info when I rang them, could they just not be bothered to look into it for something so small, are they not brainy/educated enough to be able to use the system and work out whats what, or is the info not available to them? One dealer even made some phone calls to Fiat?? and still didn't know what was wrong.

Is this the bolt you need. see attachment.

The 10 and 20 minimm order quantity is correct for the bolt and washer. I can understand it if a particular dealer doesn't use those parts and doesn't want to sell just 1 of each and have to keep the remaining 9 and 19 in stock. Perhaps the Hereford dealer does use them so doesn't mind having stock.

Perhaps they weren't interested because you'd already bought the belt kit elsewhere. Can't blame them, or expect them to sort out what should really be your seller's problem.

I knew vaguely about it because I'd previously checked on ePER to see if the Fiat kit was suitable for my VIN. It wasn't, so I never bought a very cheap one I saw on eBay a few years ago and stuck to Dayco. Until you posted about the problem, I'd never investigated why it wasn't suitable for early JTDs. I can't recall anyone else ever highlighting the problem on the forum, but at least the mystery is solved now.

For genuine parts in what ever quantity, I would recomended Magoletsi in Cheshire. Still considered the best dealer in the UK and there parts department customer service is exceptional. They have helped me over the last 15 years many a time with Fiat's and Alfa's.

I've always used Dayco. They are original equipment manufacturers to Fiat,.

Dayco have always been great. Would also endorse Gates and Contitech Kits, as they also include the water pump.

Avoid QH and SKF Kits!!

Fair comment, I was frustrated at the time though, just wanted to get the job done and its seemed to be one thing after another!

Im so glad you were able to help with it, I really appreciate it. I have seen reference on here somewhere to someone else needing to buy a different bolt for fitting the idler, but no more info was given as to what the bolt was etc.

So I picked up the new bolt and washer this afternoon, the belt is now on and tensioned up, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I should torque the idler pulley, the tensioner pulley and the Camshaft pulley up to please?

Thanks a lot, I'll try them first in the future then...

Just thought I'd complete the thread and upload a couple more photos of the old and new pulleys and bolts in case it helps anyone.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me get this sorted, my car is running like a dream :)
