I have a problem with my engine, on tickover its sounds as though its going to cut out, and when i turned(before i took it to the mechanic) the power steering it was even worse and sometimes cut the engine out, this also happend when i coming to a stop.

I took it to my local mechanic and he said an inlet pipe needed re-sealing and now everything is fine.......well the power steering doesnt cut the engine out anymore but it does make it really struggle, and when i slow down to stop the engine dies as if its about to stall then comes back to life.

Any ideas as this is drive me nuts?

I know how the engine used to saound on tickover and it wasnt as if it was about to cut out at any moment and wasnt vibrating its tits off. Also fron time to time, as im about to turn left or right the power steering will go heavy, which leads me to thing its definately something to do with that!

Thanks in advance.

What engine would help ;)

Did the mechanic check if the alternator and air con compressor turn freely ? Sounds like the pump ?eats? the power of the engine to work right, it also me be sticking.

Sorry Sven 1.2 1999 no air con.Im shocked by the mechanice diagnosis the job was FOC but id rather him charge me and fix it!

It sounds like the engine isnt giving inough power to power the pump. Cause, either the alternator, or the servo pump are sticking (hard turning) - not sure on the alternator tho, cant remember if they are on the same belt.

Worth to check the pump and the pump hose lines, and what color is the oil, any bubles in it (the tank I mean) ?

Yes theres bubbles, dad had a look at it and that was something he noticed said it seemed like it was sucking in air!the colour of fluid is black grey colour!

Sounds like its sucking water aswell !!!!!
The bubles are air - they should not be in there !
The color should be redish, or older oil darer color- like normal car oil.

I suggest a oil change and test the oil with a stick or something if its puding like. It should be watery, easy flowing.

Ok Sven thanks a million, is there a chance the pump could be ok after a fluid change?

Hard to say, if the oil transformed in to a emulsion due to water, the pump would be all sticked up and would need a clean. But either than that it should be OK.

Cheers Sven thanks your help, shocked at my mechanic, doubt ill use him again will do a fluid change at weekend and let you know if it cures it.

P.S just been out to car fluid is red and doesnt seem to be like emulsion but will change it all the same.

Please, I have allso 1.2-2000, and I am interesting how to bleed the hydraulic steering system after the changing oil in it...

Ok, anon here is how you do it:
fill the reservoar to max line. Do it slow so no bubles are produced.
Start the car and turn the wheel from ful lock on one side to the other 3 or 4 times, but do it slow. Check the reservoar if there are any bubles, if yes to it so long till the bubles go away.

That simple Sven?my mate is working on my car at weekend and i mentioned to him about bleeding the system and he replied saying the system is bled by using the steering everyday!

No i will ask him to at the weekend, was something else my dad mentioned when he had a look and said if it was maybe wd40 might free it off.

Ok Cheers again going to a long weekend but im determind to get this sorted one way or the other.
