General Ice ice baby - frozen lock

Hello, I went to defrost the car this morning -

Unlock the car with the remote, start the car, A/C on etc and led the car to defrost. I then realise that when you have the car on (used second key) you cannot use the remote to lock the car whilst it is running. (safety I am sure)

You have to use the remote key to start up and the spare key to lock, however the frikkin lock was frozen up, the key would not turn. I had to nip in the house quick in my slippers on the snow / ice (that was probably quite amusing to onlookers) run the metal end of the key under the hot tap and then was able to lock the door.

What a caper.

Why leave your car running to defrost? Scrape ice off the windscreen and jump in and drive away. Idling the car when cold just causes more engine wear.

That will have made the problem worse in future. Drop some light (3-in-1 etc) oil in there.

I had the lock on the petrol cap freeze up on me back in December. Not fun when it's -8 outside and you practically have to hammer the key in

Have to wait for the car to demist inside as well as defrost. So the car will idle either way for a few mins. I may as well sit in the house finishing my cup-o-tea whilst I wait.

It was a thick ice covering this morning and would have taken 5 mins to scrape it off all windows (unlike the p*sshole in the snow some people make in the front window only and then can't see sheet). Saw a guy this morning doing exactly that whilst on the phone.. Yeah, sorry I am going to be a bit late for work, just about to have a car accident...

Bah.

I will pop a bit of 3-in-1 oil in the lock tonight as suggested.

Well I always scrape. Only once when the car had been standing for nearly a week in -6 to -8 temps and the inside of the screen was very iced up did I leave the car to idle for a little while.

Your car in the end but as I said it does cause excess wear especially if you're using the heater at the same time.

Do you scrape with the engine off and then get in start up and off?

If I did that the fugging windscreen would mist up straight away. It does that vene if I scrape and then get in and go to drive, seems to need a couple of mins extra to de-mist.

Scrape with engine off, get in drive away straight after getting in and use aircon to demist. If you get in and faff about with belts, mirrors, radio station it'll mist up of course.

I don't have climate control just A/C. The front screen takes at least 5 minutes to defrost, before which I can see nothing at all. There is no way I could drive straight after scrpaing the wind screen

LOL perhaps I've got some special 500 then. All I do is scrape the screen till it's completely clear of ice, scrape the side windows, scrape a little ice of the rear window and then drive away with the rear window demister on.

Unless there is ice on the inside of the front screen I fail to see why you need to sit there for 5 minutes defrosting anything

This is exactly my problem. I leave the A/C on recirculation over night, but there is ice on the inside of the screen:bang:. I dont have a sunroof, & no obvious leaks

Hmmm.

I only ever use my AC in the mornings to demist right at the start then I use heat once the engine is up to temp. If you have the AC on before you stop the car for the night you will get condensation on the evaporator core which could worsen condensation.

I only had a tiny bit of ice when my car was laid up for a week because of the snow.

I have to do the same. Even if i scrape the ice off the car still has to heat up enough to kick the aircon off before the car will demist the inside of the screen. I might try 306maxi suggestion of turning off the aircon off once the car is warm and see if that results in a clearer screan the next morning as there wont be any condensation in the system. I notice this in summer when I stopped the car with the aircon on then started it again and got a instantly misted screen for a few seconds before it then cleared.

I think there is certainly something to this. Whenever I turn the air con off I always turn the heater up for a little while so the condensation doesn't kick in. As you can see I only had the tiniest bit of ice on the inside of the screen and that was after a few days in constant sub zero temperatures and down to -8 at one time.

My brother does that, but straight out of the kettle. I've always just pictured the windscreen exploding. Never has though so maybe he's onto something
