im 21 and currently looking at buying my fathers 1997 hgt, i have managed to get the insurance down to about 1100.00 which i will pay if i have to, but would like it for cheaper obviously, any suggestions?? i have 3 yrs ncd. amd i would also like to know what im going to have to look out in terms of hidden costs,i.e the car has 50.000 miles and has recently had a service, including all new tyres and usual major service things done im worried that the cambelt may go i know its recommended that that is done at 70.000miles , any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, also if anybody has any suggestions for the most cost effective worthwhile mods??,it has a sports back box and uprated plugs, if any one has any suggestions,re any tuning places or servicing around yorkshire!! thanks..

Costs and mods HELP

Okay as you may know the cam belt change is a big job £1000. There are reports that it can be done cheaper around £500-600. There is no way of physically checking the wear on a cambelt it can snap 10 days from new or 1000 days from new. You can check for signs of bearing collapse in the pulleys etc, but to do this you'd probably need the engine out agin so another big job and if its out you might as well change it. Lowering the car and sticking some 17's on will improve the looks of the car no end. As for performance parts like spark plugs and leads don't bother. Time after time tests have been carried out on these products and power gain are not evedent, no mater what they say. A full stainless steel exhuast system would be well worth the money (standard REAR section £195-253 full magnex stainless steel system £305-311 DTM or twin 3" round respectivly) as would an induction kit and superchip. From there it's head work and internal work for more power.

As for the insurence keep shopping around but many companies are now merging together i.e you phone one and there serach 100's for you. Look in the back of performance mags for specialist insurers, have you tryed Adrian Flux, Bell insurence services?

Insurance!

Forget it! I am 31 and have just "down graded" from an Alfa 156 V6 2.5 24V S3 to an new HGT (ok its done 250 miles) and my insurance went UP! I was paying around 1200 on the Alfa and the HGT is an extra £15 to insure until May.

After laughing my head of at my insurance company and then trying to get a cheaper quote elsewhere I was told that it was because the car was very "nickable" and therefore insurance on it was higher than the Alfa. So there you go ... an HGT is more desirable than an ALfa 156 V6!

good luck!

cheers guys

thanks a lot for all your suggestions guys, i have called adrian flux they have brought it down to £ 970.00 fully comp which in terms is a bit of a bargain, my mate at 21 called for a quote on a 106 rallye from the same place for £970.00,...third party fire and theft.i will have to look into the mods further, thanks again, and by the way im really looking forward to 6800 rpm, in tunnnels, what a sound !!!!

HGT INSURANCE

I'M 25 AND HAVE 5 YEARS NCD AND PRIVILEDGE INSURANCE LET ME SWOP MY INSURANCE OVER FROM MY R5 GT TURBO AT NO EXTRA COST. JUST OVER 600 QUID FULLY COMP. BY COMPARISON I WAS QUOTED ANYTHING FROM 800-1300 QUID FOR A 1997 MAREA 20 VALVE! ARE THEY TRYING TO SAY A MAREA IS MORE SPORTY THAN A BRAVO HGT?
