General How important is the heat shield

Hi

My heat shield was really reeeeaaaaaallllllyyyyyy annoying beacuse of the rattle. So iv ripped it out.

Should i get a new one or is it safe as it is? I remember with my punto the at a Sh*t-Fit told me it doesnt matter and ripped it out

Look at what is around the space where the heat shield was.... and ask yourself "would I be happy to put that / those in front of a 2kW electric fire for a few hours"...? If the answer is No then do something to deflect or reflect the radiant heat... think Traffic Jam, smoke and burning plastic / rubber from under your bonnet...

if its exhaust manifold, ive removed it from both my puntos due to rattling from corroded bolts with no ill effects, but then on these engines theres nothing too close to the manifold to damage with the heat.

AS I said earlier, they guy at kwik-fit removed from my last car.

If it's the exhaust manifold one of which you speak, you can take it off. None of the turbo cars use one. None have caught fire yet!

Just make sure you have nothing flapping about that it likely to touch the manifold.

Much the same applies for the exhaust one under the car.

why dont you just fix the rattle proberly, new exhaust hangers,clamp or engine mount. Your only hiding the problem by removing it

If its the one under the car, then your fuel lines run in there.

As Brooky says, sort it, its not wise.

The exhaust manifold is a section that conducts the exhaust gases from the combustion chambers to the exhaust pipe this sits up at the engine, then the exhaust pipe connects the manifold to the catalytic converter. The cats are usually around the middle section in most cars and can get very hot therefore id guess this is where your heat shield was and it would probably be a good idea to replace it

A heat shield is a vital component. Best to replace it and find out why it rattles.

Without the heat sheild you need to be carefull where you park it. Not such a problem now but in summer and parked over long dry grass, well I don't need to say more.

don't stay in a farm. (just playing ) Where i park they use tarmac or bricks.

This is true. I am probably thinking of the welded on bit near the cat, I can't quite visulise it as quick fit cut it off 3 years ago when my wife poped in on her way home after hearing a scraping noise.
