How Fast! 1.8 just over 130mph...whats your fastest

On the way to TRAX with TAFI & Jonathan i got just over 140mph in my HGT (racing a 5-series BMW...only just beat it, and it had a woman driver)

Only mod at the time was Cat-back S/S exhaust, and my go faster bumper mesh...

TAFI reckons he must have the slowest 1.2 in the UK, as he can only get 105mph out of his, Cat-back S/S exhuast and a K&N filter...(but he did have about 9 ton of ICE in the boot)

145mph reading from HGT 155, but I would guess a realistic figure is 135mph

As standard as you like, apart from stainless steel exhaust made as per standard kit.

Maybe it's the Abarth badge that makes it go fast. Haha.

120mph from a 1.2? Sorry chaps, but I doubt it.

i managed 130 ish in my 1.6 16v.

Mods: 15 inch OZ Super Leggera wheels (Now 17inch Evo), PiperCross induction kit, Remus Exhaust. One mate to hold camera.

I got the pic at 120, but thats coz i had to slow down.

Speed

Got about 138mph from my 155 HGT, no mods, just standard, it definitely had more to go, It was me that bottled out before the car. Managed to get this pic at around 120, then my cousin had to go one better in his RS Focus....

I had 5 people total in my 1.2 the other day, and I managed a staggering 115mph, was racing a mk1 1.6 Bravo Sx.


120 IS possible from a 1.2.

Unless you own one, and tried it yourself then don't comment because how are all us 1.2 owners right and your wrong?

The speedometer error can be quite large, especially with non original wheels...So dont always believe what you see in your speedometer, but consider something like 10mph less than that...or get your speedometer checked and repositioned...

1.8 115 hlx - totally standard

Ive had it to 130mph on a private road. It got there surprisingly easily and im sure i could have continued going right to the redline if i hadnt chickened out.

Obviously these were "speedo readings" and may not be 100% accurate.

Speedo readings at high speeds are sometimes way out.

A bloke I used to work with got pulled doing a steady 120-125 on the M6. The officer that pulled him over told him "I've just been following you at a steady 96 mph"..... 120 on the clock can be more like 95-100 in reality....

Daz - think my 1.2 may be as slow as TAFIs. before i had the 17s i had 120mph on the clock slighty down hill. since the 17s went on the best i've managed is about 105-110mph on the clock.
Roger - you dont own a 1.2 so how do you know!? i would agree however that 120 on the clock isnt 120 in reality. what you still doing on this forum anyway?!

i think Jolly Roger Ramjet has either owned or a least driven a 1.2 before - hence his somewhat condescending "BTS" label from previous posts.
Sounds like anyone with aftermarket wheels can't rely on the speedo anyway.

I have locally a check your speed thingy in a 30 limit - you drive past and it says how quick your going!

I went past yesterday at 32 on clock it sed 30 on the checker - that means that at 120 mph if the difference is relative to speed then the car would be doing 112!

So 120 on my spedo down hill was deff acurate - i would never claim a 120 top speed in a 1.2 but going on that basis i was down hill 3 miles past max speed and still soem to go!

Id say thats right - thats also with 17's!

No offence but your 1.6 has lower revs at 120 than mine and mine is a 1.8!!

so something isnt right here?!hopefully i haven't offended?

no, the 1.6 and 1.8 is geared totally different, hence why the 1.6 does more (mph) in 1,2,3 and 4th gear. Also explains why the 1.8 feels much quicker because you have to rev the bo**ocks off the 1.6 to get it going.

I used to own a mk1 1.8 bravo which red lined at 130mph (6600rpm it was touching) why is there a variance between models???

Just to add my tuppence worth i got 130 on the clock on my standard wheels before i put on the 17"s
But like others have said it still had more go in it and i was holding it back, the steering got to feel very light i wouldn't take it back to that speed it's done it once and that's enough.

I tend to agree with you there Rab, been there, tried it, done it. I know what the motor can do, and I know my limits (lower than my HGT's). It was one of those things I had to get out of my system, see how quick it can go, but now I'm quite happy poodling along at 80-85 and still being able to pull away from boy racers in Nova's etc while I'm still in 5th gear..... satisfying at my age.
