was doin 70ish in a 60 zone came round a corner and spotted a mobile speed camera van. Braked reasonably soon down to 60. What do you think my chances are?

I have a road angel so tend to use that to judge my speed. What it does show though is that the speedo on most cars is around 10% overstated. Therefore if your speedo said you were doing 70 you were probably only doing between 63 and 64. When you braked you only had to lose 3-4 mph and not 10.

And they are accurate, very

by braking you probally showed that you were speeding:( but if you did so before his gun had chance to get you then no points for you.

at 70mph by the clocks with 17's (205/40/r17) on, I'm doing 68mph by gps.

you might be ok.

If you were only doing 33mph Tommy you should be ok.

The police must give at least 10% tolorence for cars with analogue speedo. Most police forces give 10% +2mph.

Though the camaras in the vans are very accurate and very quick so by the time you have seen the van, its normally too late.

There is a saying for this.

"DON'T SPEED" ;)

Not quite true. Its recommended the police allow 10% + 2, but its not actually law and it certainly doesn't matter what type of speedo you have.

In general all car speedos under read. Even fancy digital ones.

Suppose i'll just have to wait and see :( . Up goes the insurance

My dad and I were travelling towards cumbria and got on this road and right round this corner was a really long road.....somewhere you wouldnt expect them camaras. there was a mobile van about quarter mile to half a mile away. my dad slowed right down to the speed limit even though there wasnt signs that tell what the speed limit is. The speed limit was 50 but it was to late. 2 weeks later, dad gets 60 quid fine and 3 points. was reading an article that came with the fine and judgeing by the sounds of it they DO zoom in on the car if it is far away which is a bit of a ****. Thats what they are like these days.

There was a program on a while back, a Richard Hammond one and it showed that a stationary car produced a reading of 17mph! Most cameras aren't greatly accurate, the most accurate ones are the SPECS cameras that read you number plate and work in pairs - saw a load of them when I went to Nottingham last weekend.
The 10% +2mph isn't law but it is law for them to allow some leeway because of the innacuracies of speedo (both analog and digital).

I also heard a farmer recieved a speeding ticket for doing 90 odd mph in a 30 zone in Wales. There were to problems with this, he lives in Cornwall and hadn't been to Wales when he supposedly speeded and the vehicle in question was an old tractor which had a max speed of 34mph!

Good luck with not getting a ticket, if you do I believe there are some ebooks on torrentspy.com (can be bought on ebay) that tell you your rights when it comes to speeding tickets and also gives a number of ways to challenge them.

if you braked pretty quickly, and fairly hard, you were probably fine mate. plus, you really weren't going that fast. plus, theres every chance you weren't in the target zone yet. They have a red van near my work every few weeks. moves about, but its invariably 'just' round a bend. a**holes. lol

never had a problem with the police actually being there though, cause the road outside my work gets used as a speedway after dark, and the racers do go pretty damn quickly! i reckon some of them are touching 100 (on an unlit 60mph road) Theres been 3 major crashes in the last 6 months, 1 was a boy racer who was all alone, and slewed off the road on a meduim bend. his car flipped onto the roof when he hit the crash barrier. Another, on new years day, was cause by someone OVERTAKING on theat same bend! head on collision, both cars doing about 50mph, no fatalities, but the car that WASN'T overtaking had both occupants in hospital for over a week...

anyway, i digress somewhat!

i think its highly unlikely you'll get a ticket if you reacted quick enough..
