Been thinking of this for a bit, do I invest in a low cost compressor to check / inflate tyres plus have the advantage of being to use an air-gun for some tasks like wheel removing etc. Or just stick with using the wheel-nut spanner?

Bearing in mind our "fleet" numbers 4 cars plus 2 others I get to work on from time to time the compressor might be good value. Seen some for £180 (surplus stock) comes with the regular garage type tyre inflator, plus an air-gun, spry gun. The other option is an RAC600 12volt tyre pump for around £25. Anyone got their own compressor? Or have any views on the RAC600?

you need a big powerfull compressor to work an air gun, so probably better off just getting a pump that works off fag lighter or a combo one with booster cables that works on its own power

Like the RAC600 eh dave? Dammit... I'd like a compressor to do stuff... Maybe a used one off Flea-Bay but you never know if they are good to go...

Most air-guns seem to want around 4cfm and some of the cheapy ones will deliver that but I guess its an issue with continuous flow dave? Like tank storage and maintainable pressure?

I bought one from Aldi two years ago £59.99. Seen them there several times since for the same price. Came with two hoses, air nozzle, spray gun, sand blaster and tyre pressure gauge.

It's OK for wheel nuts (air gun was extra £14.99 with set of impact sockets) but not hub and crankshaft sprocket nuts.

The air nozzle is brilliant for blowing dust off the upholstery and dashboard whenever I come back from Greece.

a compressor of the sort to power tools seem a little over the top just for car tyres, a 12v compressor should be more than adequate, can keep it in your boot so if you're away and want to check tyres quickly and top them up if they've gone down just 2 minutes to do. can also use for Airbeds and other inflatables.

only downside is they're not the quickest, can take a while, and run off ciggarette lighter, so need to have a car handy.

I like the sound of that Davren, Aldi eh? :chin: I'll have to see if theres one near here in Telford, go have a peek. I wouldnt intend to use it for heavy duty work on the car but I can think of a few uses for it around the house! And £14.99 for an air-gun & sockets sounds good, thanks for that.

As with all Aldi "special buys", they don't have them all the time. You can register for e-mail notifications every week to get advanced notice of what/when they have.

They just opened a "Power Tools" section, so fingers X'd..... :)

those self powered units are ok for the odd use but try running an inverter off one and it will be flat in next to no time...

same with the fag lighter versions they are ok but take a long time if your taking a tire from almost flat but are cheaper and more portable than a compressor

i'd go for one 25 ltrs or bigger and a long air hose

the Aldi air tools i bought are re branded Wolf tools so ok quality

just dont put too much line oil in them or you will be stripping it down to degrease it when you realise its stopped working ;)

Was looking at getting the same compressor from aldi but i did a check fist and found this..might be worth checking out just incase..:)

Good spot Phil, I've decided against the compressor from anyone now, the strong arm stuff on wheel-bolts does me some good I suppose...

I will get one of the electric tyre inflators though, £20 - £30 for the one rated the best by Auto-Express (cant remember the make now) but I'll know it when I see it!

Could still get one though but at a cheaper cost to you on the bay..
