General hmmm. Timing belt myself?

Hey all.
Had a punto sporting R reg for about 5 months in total now and now that it has crossed the 50000 mile mark i am getting worried about the old timing belt.

Now...... I have read the Haynes manual over and over again, by the way I am in no way an expereinced mecahnic.
Have changed the oil, airfilter, few bulbs, plugs etc thats it!

But I do have a lot of confidence and was just thinking about doing it myself. As i said i have read the haynes manual and know what each component does and how it links in with the function of the engine.

My Dad (im only 18 btw) has told me that it's not simply reading the book and that's it, and I FULLY understand that....... but i think i can manage it myself.

Any comments?

There is however, an expereinced mechanic in the village who has offered his help, but he said in the summer i don;t want to wait that long.

What do you guys think?

Go for it, get a timing belt kit it has the tenshioner bearing in it aswell its only one bolt to change that. punto is one of the easiest to do lots of room to see what you are doing.

ok, I was going to replace the tensioner anyway... but what is this kit you talk about>>>???

its just a box with a timming belt and the tensioner aswell, it works out cheeper than buying them seperate, you can get them from motor factors, car accesory places and bearing shops, SKF are a good make.

haha. The internet is soooooo kool!!! posted my message only 2 hrs ago and had 2 replies!

anyway.... where is best to get the belt? Halfords have both their own make and another make which i would go for. Or shall i go to Fiat?

Gona get the special camshaft locking tools/piston setting rods from fiat obviously... but in the past been given wrong things from fiat which involove going back to them and changing it. But that won;t be possible if im half way through doing it!!

what ya think?

look in yellow pages see if you have a bearing suplier we have a couple in our town, tell them its a SKF part they will know what SKF is, if not look in yellow pages for a motor factors they will be next cheepest, try to avoid fiat dealer and halfords.

Cambelt is a bobby's job to replace (ie easy) - the Haynes procedure is, for once, pretty much the right way to do the job. Just make SURE that the timing marks are properly aligned and the belt properly tensioned before starting the engine. Oh, and it may be wise to replace the alternator belt while you're at it, as you hve to remove it anyway to take off the cambelt. Should only be 3 or 4 quid for the alternator belt; as I recall, cambelt was about £6 and tensioner £19 (all from local motor factors).
