Hey guys

I have a Grande punto 2009 tjet 1.4.

I have noticed that when I am driving I can hear a faint high pitched whistle when I press on the accelerator pedal but as soon as I let off it stops.

Does anyone have any idea what it maybe?

Loss of power too? If so and a recent development then you probably have a boost leak. Check all hoses on cold side of turbo to intercooler from intercooler to manifold.
You will hear the turbo spool but mine does not whistle.

Cheers

Ben

Hey Ben.

I wouldn't say it's a loss of power. When I press down on the pedal my car sets off quite quickly after pressing. But I will give it a look and test out with engine running and bonnet open and see if I can.pin point it. Can it be anything to do with alternator belt / tensioner. I only ask as mine is OEM and never been changed?

Had the same issue with mine, turned out to be the little black pipe connected to the turbo. It has split on the end, made some cool noises but no pull from the car, snipped off the split bit and re-clipped it to the turbo

Hey kishan will give this a look out

Hey kishan

I've been having a look and was wondering if you wouldn't mind pointing out to me where abouts you was looking when you had problem.

Thanks again

Hey Ben
I've attached a picture. Would u mind pointing out to me where I should be giving a thorough look as you suggested in previous post.

Thanks again

On front of engine, left of the turbo heat shield, there is the wastegate actuator (like an alu can); follow the black tiny pipe (10mm ish), it should go the the turbo pressurized side (not on the intake) thru an electro-valve. Be this pipe cracked somewhere, You'd hear what you describbe...

Hey berne

I think I know what u mean as on the left side of the turbo is a very thin pipe connecting to a type if switch, but mine doesn't connect to the front of the car anymore the clip does not sit in anymore so it basically just hangs down. So I need to inspect that. I'll try take a pic so u can see. So that maybe problem.

The electro-valve (the switch) hanging has probably somehow damaged the hose. That's most likely where the whissle comes from.

Hey berne this was the thing I was in about that should connect to front if car via a clip but it appears to be broken. Is this what you meant and in the interest of learning, if u know what is its function??

That is the thing Bernie was talking about. it's the boost solenoid and it gives the ECU the possibility to control the wastegate actuator...eventually gives the ECU some control over the turbo.

Aurick's right: the 3 ways valve connect the actuator either to high or low pressure side of the turbo cold side; controlled by the ECU, it opens or closes the wastegate, restricting or allowing full exhaust gas to get in the hot side; It's PWM controlled so kind of proportional, not simply ON/OFF ...
