Technical High Fuel Consumption! Please help!!!

Hi , there
I have bought Punto MK2, V reg around 3 months ago and it looks like i have nothing else then trouble. I have already changed head gasket , exhaust, front pads, and had problem with handbrake. When i done head gasket i was told there is some problem at the bottom of the engine and thats why car is juddering a little bit . I was advice to keep an eye on this . Last week i have noticed that car is pulling left...... I went to the garage and guess (Continental Cars ) what? Nothing. All is ok . No problems (appart of juddering) All was Ok i should say cause i have notice that right now my Punto is Eating 10l / 100 km. Thats a lot. That is pointless casuse i need to travel from London to Hertford every day and thats almost a price of train travel ticket.
Well - again i have no clue about cars - can perform only basics checks but also im really desperate to sort this out. I do not want to sell this car cause its really nice to drive (i had Vauxhall and Seat before) . Is there anyone who can advise - what to do ?

Hi just a quick one regarding the pulling to the left, you may just need to get the tracking done, most tyre fitting places can do this as far as im aware, what kind of juddering is it you get is it at high speed or when idling?

Regarding to pulling to the left - everything is ok right now , it was pulling for 2 days and then stopped . No pulling .
Juddering - its only when on idle or 1st gear. All is good when 2nd or any other gear.

Hard to say then to be honest, have you only taken it to one garage or have you tried a couple of places? if just the one it may be worth getting a second opinion from another garage.

Looks like i have no other option , the only problem is that i do not want to spend a lot of money just to hear that it looks ok . I have impression that no mather where i go , they have just quick look. Last time i went to garage - they told me that its obvious that it will be high fuel consumption if the car is juddering. I can agree with this statement but i know that car was juddering before and all was good. I know that juddering is quite common problem in Puntos. Its just that i have impression that they will give you good service only if you have all of your emergency warning lights on . Otherwise - you know - no sign - no problem. Is there anyone who know any place where they can actually have deep look and quite reliable opinion ?

Hopefully it is just the tappets, don't know how difficult to clean the residue but as they are just under the cam cover (top of the engine) hopefully wouldn't cost much to resolve. Fingers crossed.

Juddering on take-off (in first) is quite common with a Punto - overtime you'll get better by experience at avoiding it (but not completely eliminating it).

Pulling-left - do a search, you'll find plenty of posts on it. My contribution would be that your near-side landing-gear takes a hammering thro kerbside potholes & cars overtime develop a list to port. Even if you changed both n/s & o/s shocks for new - you may still have the problem.

Well - first of all - the petroll arrow started to going down too qucikly. It went down 2 dashes!
I have done 61 miles and then decided to go to petrol station. ( had full tank before) it was quite shocking when i have toped up almost 11 litres. That's too much . Im travelling from London to Hartford . Sometimes A10 sometimes Motorway so i have 50% on 50% urban/outside city .
I have no idea what to do .

Can you post-up on here your trip computer readings?

If you press [trip] once you’ll have your range (e.g. 339) … press [trip] again you’ll have trip mileage (e.g. 61). From that we’ll know how far (339+61) your Punto is capable of driving on a full tank.

But post-up all your readings: av. mpg; av. mph; time … write them all down.

When you fill your tank (tomorrow/Mon?) zero your trip computer (press [trip] for over 3 secs). Also keep your petrol receipt & write on it your odometer reading.

First - total mileage ( how many miles i have done so far in total)
Second - Trip mileage - how many miles i have done since i restarted the counter (trip mileage) . That's it. What's the range you writing about and how to check av. mpg , av. mph ?

It's some years since I had my Mk2 (now have a GP 1.2/8v) - so can't recall exactly what readouts a Mk2 gives. If you have your manual - look under `trip computer' or `digital display' or `controls' in index.

I believe the first readout should be your range (miles available before you run-out of fuel). Second readout will be (as you say) miles covered since last zero.

What do you have so far?

There is a instruction what to do when excessive fuel consumption occures. , First thing is to check air filter, therefore - tomorrow after work i will have look is there all ok . if not then i will change the filter , if all is good i will follow next steps. Tomorrow im going to work , i will top up some petrol and will see what is going on. Thanks for support. It looks like its still long road for me but im quite upset now and i think i will unscrew all parts if necesarry . Regards

OK fill-up tomorrow - keep receipt & write odometer (mileage) on receipt. On Tue fill-up again to capacity & write mileage on receipt. Come back online Tue evening & post-up litres from receipts & mileage.

If you know you’ve done 61 miles since topping-up at 61096 (61157-61) – then do you know exactly how many litres you put in? (or price/litre & total receipt)?

If (say) you put in 11 litres (2.42 gal) for the 61 miles then I make that 25.20 mpg.

If (say) you put in 10 litres (2.20 gal) for the 61 miles then I make that 27.73 mpg.

You will have to check for a number of re-fills (say 4 or 5) to result in an average that will be more reliable than any single calculation.

Do not go above 40 mph until you reach normal temp. … & what mph do yet get up to on your trip?

Hi , Sorry for delay but i was checking all the time what is going on. I know exactly how many liters i toped up cause i got all receipts. Last time i have done 61 miles and i toped up 10 liters which like i said was much too much. I toped up on last sunday and went for 20 miles drive. Next day i have done 42 miles to work and back so all toghether is 62. I went to station and toped up again. This time i have toped up 5 litres!!!!!!! Its a half of what i did before!!!! HALF! ( 62 miles = 100 km) , ( arrow just moved little bit ) . Im 100% sure that first time when i went to petrol station i have toped up FULL, Im always trying to squezze little bit more the, so i know the tank was full. Now again - since i have toped up yesterday , the arrow did not move at all , ( done 21 milees to work already) . I understand that i will need to check copule more times but to be honest 5 litres diffrence for 100 km its a lot. Odometer is schowing correct amount, trip computer matches odometer.( No problems at all.)
Again , thx for help Caravadossi , i will keep an eye on petrol consumption and will update .
