Hi All,
tomorrow i will be viewing /collecting a 2002 stilo 5 door(yeah i know:D). I have added pics below.
it has 103000 on the clock but appears to have been very well looked after.
It has what appears to be the standard airbag warning light on and broken upper glovebox hinge.
It has 2 months tax and a full MOT.
My question is apart from the usual checks is there anything particular to this model that i should specifically look for ?. And what would be a fair price(they are asking £450 which i thought was very good).
Thanks Minty

Thanks guys, whats your thought on the mileage and price??

Depends what engine it has.

I'm sure that registration number, or one similar to it came up in a post recently. :chin:

Hi Davren, its the 1.2 engine.
If it did i hope it was good news:eek:

Don't expect it to be a ball of fire - the Stilo is quite a heavy car for a small 1.2 engine to pull around...

Trust me Phil that will not be a problem as having driven a 2.4 V6 Mondeo i am soooooo looking forward to a bit of sensible driving costs!!!

Value of the car will depend on whether the previous owner(s) drove it sensibly. 103,000 miles is probably getting close to the end of a 1.2 engine's life in a Stilo. As Phil says, it's a heavy car for a 1.2 engine to pull. Probably why Fiat discontinued the 1.2 engine for the Stilo in 2003/2004.

Now you have me worried. 2 previous owners and service history till 2009 makes me feel a little better.....saying that, if i get a year out of it surely £450 is not a lot to ask?????
Would i be able to buy a low mileage one for that???. I dont think i would.......would i??

Hi fellow Derby owner!!. Your post makes me feel better. So sensible driving it is then!!
I managed to get the car on what they call a 10 year plus policy £150 fully comp with breakdown for the year with Peter Best and i dont have to use my no claims for it which works well as they are being used on my transit!!

Thats a lot of miles for only a small engine... thats diesel milage, its average miles for its age but on a 1.2 its a bit worrying.... but for £450, you'll get your moneys worth! But i would be pushed towards a 1.4 version personally :)

that works out at an average of 9500 miles a year so well below average. If it has fsh and has been driven kindly there is no reason to expect problems. Go for it at that price.

Well its arrived and on first impressions im quite impressed:).

I found the drive back from collecting it comfortable with clean gear changes and quite responsive for a 1.2(y) .
Very impressed with the amount of gadgetry for a base model(us men and gadgets hey).

Few quirks/Issues though.

Air bag light on- nothing new there then! :)

Service light on- self explanitary i would assume.

Passenger side Knocking over bumps - Anti roll bars ??(considering it was motd yesterday i am surprised this was not picked up!!)

Broken CD-Changer and Hinges to upper glove box- Damn!!!!

All in all quite impressed although some annoying similarities to a marea i had a whole ago.
1, Why does the handbrake boot never stay where it should!!!
2, Why are the door card plastics so flimsy!!!
But if thats as bad as it gets then im a happy bunny...........for now.
Cheers Minty

Legend, in the overall perspective of things its not the worst car you could of bought. i mean, you could of got a Renault ;) lol (I will NEVER! buy another one)

anyway, all the issues you mentioned are either just the general design with the door cards, or a knocking noise that could hopefully be something simple to fix.

when i had my ford focus on coilovers the strut was loose and made a nocking noise so id check over all the bolts around your suspension area as this is what takes most the beatings from the bumps anyway

Glad you're liking it. On the above points:

1. The 'service coupon expired' message can only be removed by a dealer (or FIAT Ecu Scan). I just live with it (at least it doesn't beep at you!).

2. Knocking more likley to be ARB drop links than the ARB itself. There's a guide in the Guides section on how to remove and replace.

3. If your door cards are really bugging you, take them off and see if you can reinforce them a bit. A lot of the plastic (handles etc) are held on by plastic welding that works loose. With a soldering iron and a few self tapping screws you can improve the rigidity.

the 1.2s are strong motors! fundamentally they haven't changed since their 90's punto counterparts. i think now they have a shedload more sensors and emisions related stuff but apart from that youll be onto a winner... expect the HG to be due soon though as iirc on the 1108cc and the 1242cc lumps theyre due every 53,000mi

Edit:-

Autodata says 72,000mi or 60 months (for the 1.2 Stilo)
