Normally there is a round plastic storage thing for the jack which sits in the spare wheel. Scrappy might help or roll it up in bubblewrap or cloth and tie it to the wheel.
It sits in the boot under the carpet inside the spare wheel. It should have a plastic storage holder thing for it. If not then see if you can get it from a scrappy.To get it to fit inside the plastic holder, you need to turn it up/down to the correct position to fit it in there. If it still doesn't, then you may have a non-original jack from some other car.
Like it was designed for something else entirely? My experience exactly - a four year old could probably do it in twenty seconds though.
