I'm having some problems with my Grande Punto steering-the wheel is making a 'crunching' sound when I'm driving which i can put up with but on damp days the power steering keeps switching itself of while I'm driving, could this just be a loose wire, tried changing the fuse but still acting up??
Any advice would be appreciated!! Ta.

Steering problems arent unheard of on Grande Puntos, if yours still has one, take it in to a good dealer and have it inspected under the warranty. The steering not working correctly is potentially very dangerous aswell as annoying. Plenty of these have had new steering racks etc under warranty.

when you say crunching noise...

is it more like a broken mattress sound?

if so get a friend to turn the wheel 1/4 turn back and forth and feel the front springs with your hand ((obviously mind your fingers)) they should both rotate smoothly with no stickyness or "jumping"

if one is moving smoothly and the other is juddering the turret top bearing has siezed on the juddering side..

To be honest my car has given off a fair few odd noises and a couple of knocks and groans over the time ive had it, they have always gone away by themselves but ive never had warning lights or steering 'failure' which is why its going this month so I dont have to deal with having no warranty, these are going to be expensive to own post warranty with a few miles under their belts the same as every 'advanced' modern car.

Most of my steering noises and wobbles were cured when I fitting my lowering springs too, strange....

If the steering is actually cutting out, surely that can only be an electronic problem, I cant imagine it would have loose wires as I would have thought all the wiring would be arranged in nice solid multiplugs, and a mechanical problem wouldnt cause motor assistance to cease?

Thanks for all your help and advice peeps, much appreciated, looks like I'll have to book it into a dealer!!
