help with FIAT PUNTO ACTIVE 03

hi

i have a fiat punto active 1.2, 03 reg and has done 54000 miles

When i accelerate the car doesnt pick up speed anymore and struggles at even reaching 70mph where as last week i was driving it at 85mph!!!!

whats the problem? garage man said clutch sensor or engine!!!! I hope its not the engine as i only recently bought the vehicle!!

Right we need more info
Is the car a 16v or the 8v?

Do you have Fault lights on dash?
Does it run rough (Missfiring)
When was it last serviced?

And if its clutch - does the engine scream when you put your foot down
If stationary with handbrake and lift clutch up - does it struggle to run then dies or Keeps running or stalls?

I'd be thinking tho for a 8v - that the timing belt has slipped

no warning lights are on

when accelertating the car the engine makes noise but very slow pick up, it struggled to even go at 60mph (or less sometimes)

when handbrake is on and i lift the clutch the car tries to move, biting point seems fine.

Car was serviced this year (before i bought it) in Aug i believe

EDIT : went to 2nd mechanic , he said its the clutch, would that also have an effect on the fuel consumption?
